As far as I know you can still bowfish in Ontario. You can find all the info you want on it in the fishing regulations. We used to tackle carp on our bows as youngsters back when all you could get was wood or fiberglass arrows and recurve bows. I can remember attaching a spool to my 36lb draw Ben Pearson recurve when I was about 13, boy I thought I was some cool high tech hunter/fishrmen then.

When I lived in Saskaatchewan and considered taking up archery, I happened upon a good photo collection of local archery fishermen/women.
The vast majority were using recurve bows, as compound bows tend to be way too powerful for this close range sport.
Also I noticed many of these fishermen improvised and did not even buy a zebco line reel. An empty plastic one or two litre pop bottle was used. The cap was somehow attached to the front of the bow near the centre, the threaded end facing forward. The improvised fishing reel was merely threaded onto the front (like a target bow counterweight)
Simple, yet ingenious I think.

Bowfishing is great fun , if you already have a bow its pretty easy to get setup. You just need a couple bowfishing arrows (heavy fiberglass with no fletching) some line and a spool. There are kits out there with everything you need for like $70. I always had good luck in a canoe, that way you can travel a few ks and find out where those monster carp are hiding. Remember to aim for the bottom of the fish or just below because the water changes you point of view . If you aim for the fish you will shoot high.

I used to see people shoot carps all the time when I was little. I remember telling one of the guys bowfishing that there's no deer in the lake. He laughed and told me he's shooting carps. That was in the 90's.

All the info on bowfishing/spear fishing can be found on page 11 of the fishing regs. the regs are available in PDF format on the mnr website.

This is my rig I used on my compound with solid fiberglas arrows and aluminum arrows with a smaller aluminum arrow inside the shaft to give it strength and wieght. Also made my own barbs.
