Bowhunting deer but carrying a shotgun for small game ?

I'm sure this must have happen to many of you but I will go bowhunting deer for several day at the end of september but I was wondering if it was acceptable to bring the shotgun and orange jacket in the back-pack to take it out if I see a lot of small game ?

(No, there is no bear so its not for protection, its for hunting)

I can see its probably a borderline situation with a game warden, but is there any newspaper article or something in writing that describe this situation and the outcome ??
 
Don't know about Quebec, but having any firearm in a blind during bow season is illegal, (Especially in a bows only WMU), in Ontario. That doesn't mean you can't have a shotgun in your camp. Just not in the blind while bow hunting.
Quebec's rules should be in the Provincial hunting regs.
 
I have read the rule and its not explained. In quebec, there is no "bow only" season. You can always hunt small game with a gun during the deer bow season. (in my zone, small game with gun open on sept 18 and deer hunt with bow start on sept 25)
 
Hunt one or the other.

Why would you blast off a shot gun round at a chicken, when there could be a book deer coming down the trail
 
It probably would not be popular with any other bow hunters in the area,sitting in a tree stand with a deer close by and a shotgun goes off?
 
Considering that if any other bowhunter hear my gun, its because they are trespassing (meaning that gun shot cannot be heard from outside the boundary of the land) ...

what about a muzzle loader in wack shack with bow during bow&muzzleloader season:stirthepot2:
 
whe n deer hunting you can not carry any other arrows but broad heads must have two sharo edges at least two inches of cutting edge not surated .read the regs for ont it is on there DUTCH
 
In Alberta, bear season opens early sept. and if you are bow hunting big game, and have a bear tag in your pocket, and a rifle on your back, I'm not sure that they could legally do anything to you. I carry a pellet pistol in a shoulder holster for chickens and squirrels that chatter and get me busted.

Then you better show the CO the bear tag only. If you say you're bow hunting whitetail and the rifle is for bear, you'd probably be up a certain creek without a paddle.
Generally, if there's a bow only season open and you have a valid tag that's for that area,season and species, you can't carry any other firearm with you.

That is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Why the hell would someone be shooting a shotgun while bow hunting for a deer. You'll have just about as much success if you were running around the forest naked with a big stick with bells on it and blowing a whistle. If your in shotgun range of anything you want to kill your more than in range to hit it with your bow. Why even waste your time buying a deer tag if thats how you plan to hunt. Also I may stand corrected but I am pretty sure somewhere in the rule book it sais you can only be in possession of one firearm (which includes bows) while hunting. To prevent some of you weekend worriers from shooting off your five rounds aloud in your mag and picking up another fully loaded firearm to continue shooting and missing.

I think he is half wrong, I believe its more along the lines, Deer/Big game cannot be taken with any arrow that doesn't have atleast two sharp edges o something like that but I am pretty sure it doesnt say you cant carry a field pointed tipped arrow. Also if its really that big of a deal for you that you must shooting everything you see while bow hunting and you want to be sure you following the rules than go to walmart or crappy tire and buy some super cheap broad heads for your little vermin.

Who are you to tell anyone what is the right and wrong way to hunt. This man asks for some advice on regulations and you start giving him the "I'm better than you because I choose to hunt another way" speech. If he chooses to hunt like this, on what appears to be private hunting land, and it's legal to do so, all the more power to him. Maybe he has a bad morning of archery and chooses to switch to a little bird hunting on the way back to the truck? Maybe he isn't a hard core bow hunter and is just out enjoying what nature has to offer and on this particular day it's birds and not deer?


My hunting group always has at least one shotgun with us while muzzleloader hunting just in case we find a nice little patch to do some upland. I know it's different than what was asked but it's kind of the same.

As mentioned earlier, asking a CO is probably the best way to go. Just simply explain what you did earlier, that it's not for protection but for birds.

Regs have changed Ed, we can use serrated blades now, began last bow season. They removed the "serrated" clause.
up until last year the wording was "at least two cutting surfaces of non serrated steel", which left a loop hole, manufactures began to add "bleeder blades", small unserrated blades between the large serrated ones, which still maganged to be legal. But as I said, there is no serrated clause anymore.

The only time you are required to wear orange in Ontario is during a controlled hunt, if you do not have a tag for a controlled hunt you can still hunt small game, but you are limited to a .22LR, and still must wear orange. If it is archery season you may have a shotgun, but you may not be in possession of shot size larger than #4.
 
casterpollox correctly worded my intention. If I bow hunt all day, see nothing, and on my way home I see a large patch of perdrix, with a bow, you get one, with the shotgun, you get enghout for dinner.
(yes, I have both permit)

airjmc87, you are really rude, please remove your comment. I was asking a question about hunting regulation and if its common practice. I saw a lot of picture of people bowhunting bears with a shotgun nearby, which is quite similar.
