I don't know if my nerves can take it any more and I'm loosing my hair at an alarming rate. The only thing I can think of is it has to be caused by bow hunting.

My season so far ( four nights in the stand ) has led to the following.

1) Deer coming out at the wrong side of the field day one and two
2) Day three: Four deer come into the stand from behind and holding up at 30 yards with one nice buck just standing there broadside with no way at all to get a shot off because of the tree.
3) Tonight: While I'm walking in a small buck is feeding right at the entrance of the trail I need to take to get into my one stand. I try a sneek but he feeds away. I get into my stand and the wind shiflts an I here the snorts of deer that wer coming in that busted me. Then it is still early so I quitely move to another stand I have set up. I'm not there 20 minutes when I here a rustle of leaves. Right there not one but two big bucks. The wind is perfect I'm well hidden and they are coming in. The front buck is about to step into my shooting lane and he is two steps from giving me a 12 yard broadside shot. Too much brush in front of his vitals so there I am ready to rock when a third deer breaks a branch about 50 yards up the trail from me. The buck stops dead then just casually hops back into the thick stuff. Finally to add insult two injury the bucks step out onto the open field just 80 yards away and feed for a few minute before stolling away. They did not see me, smell, me or bust me in any way the set up was perfect

I quit.

Not.

You just experienced & described exactly why it's hunting & why it's so much fun!!!

Last year, I got my deer by shooting left handed (I'm right handed) with my Excalibur ExoMax when the deer came out at 10 yards over my right shoulder. Passed on shots on other deer before that, it was frustrating but I smile thinking about it now, frustrated at the time... ha ha

Good times!

Cheers
Jay

Now that the next day has arrived I can appreciate last night a bit more.

I did not take a bad shot and end up losing an animal. That would drive me insane.

I got to see two big bucks so close I could count their eyelashes and they had no idea I was 15 ft above their heads.

With a long gun a fellow would never experience that.

However, work schedule changed and I can't go out tonight.

Now that p*sses me off.

You've been out 3 times and saw more than 5 deer. I'd be happy with that experience. Where I bow hunt the deer are almost nocturnal and usually spooky. I'm happy to get one shooter per season.

Jay was right by saying "You just experianced & described exactly why its hunting & why its so much fun!!" you can't get one every time you go seeing lots is a good thing and brings a confident feeling. Not to stir the pot here but please don't say a "With a long gun a fellow would never experiance that" I have shot many deer with a rifle at 25yards or less and had many up close and personal encounters while hunting with one.

Better luck next time hope you get one of those shooters!

Not meaning to say long gunners don't see that but around where I hunt rifle hunting generally leads to long shots at deer and most of the time the rifle hunters don't stray too far from their half tons.

As for me I'd be just as happy with a fat doe as one of those big bucks. I love a set of horns as much as the next guy but scoring a trophy is not high on my bucket list. I just love the thought of tagging out in bow season and then spending the rest of the season chasing ruffies or guiding some freinds so they can fill their tags.

Right on, the meat and the experiance are what it all about. We got our fair share of people who don't venture far from their half tons either, kind of gives the rest of us a bad rap. It is fun watching or helping friends tag out as well sure adds to the experiance.

Good luck!

Yes - it's called "hunting", not "collecting".

Depending on how you hunt, you can see just as many deer up close when armed with a rifle as with a bow. The reason why so many rifle hunters never do, is that even for those who still hunt, many can't sit still for more than 10 minutes, know little about concealment (scent, visual, sound, etc.), and depending on where you are, you will be joined by dozens of noisy, smelly, orange-clad hunters who have spooked the deer into hiding. All rifle hunters should take lessons from bow hunters.

Six years ago, I was well-concealed in a ground blind and had a buck come 10 ft from me and stand on his hind legs rubbing his antlers on the branches of a tree. I got to see a rub established. He only lived about another 10 minutes, so he didn't get to use it again, but he was tasty!

Ahhhhhh.....must get in my tree stand.....muuuuusssttt get ..........
Bowhunting is all about that....and when all the stars align....it just gets better.
Good luck!
