I wouldn't be caught dead with a 30 carbine in the bush for defense. Or maybe I would.... be dead... Haha.
It's ballistically inferior to the x39 and I wasn't all that impressed with the x39 results on a large black bear a few years ago. So no way on the 30. Though I can be found in the bush with a x39 often, I shoot it well, it's penetration is adequate, and I'm practiced with it enough to be competent under stress. Though I usually run a short 870 as I mentioned earlier.
End of the day penetration and shot placement are the two most important factors. So a CNS shot with a round that has suitable penetration ability. Run something that meets the above criteria. Make sure you can practice with it comfortably, practice a lot. A monster cartridge does you no good if you aren't proficient in speed and accuracy under stress, and a crap cartridge with no penetration isn't hitting the grey between the ears.
