Hey guys, just wondering peoples opinions between the two. It's my first 10/22 build, will be a shorty. It will be used 80% at the range, but would like something that wouldn't be an issue to head into the bush with. I like the evo in the more traditional tones, I'm just wondering how practical it would be? Would there be any issues with putting a sling on it? Basically I want a light, short, pack kind of rifle.

The tacticool seems like it would be a bit more practical with the finish. Just wondering if the evo would be suitable as well?

I also like the hogue, but I can't seem to find anyone with them in stock. So if anybody has any tips in that regard, I'm all ears.

I have the Tacticool, and its a great stock for bench or prone, less so for shooting off hand. I think the pistol grip of the Evolution would make it easier to wield about and would be well suited to a short barrel. So for a more versatile stock, I'd favor the Evolution, but for a long range bench or prone target gun I'd favor the Tacticool.

Look into the issue of barrels sagging with the 10/22 especially if you have a heavy barrel.

Not sure if it would be an issue with the shorty, but there is no support at all for the barrel in the EVO, and with the aluminum receiver and a heavy barrel.........

There are aftermarket v-blocks that are meant to fix this though.

If you want to go in the bush with your 10/22 I'd go the Evo stock all the way.
I've build both Tacticool and Evo rifles and agree with Grizzlypeg.
The Tacicool is not an offhand rifle stock.

Thanks for the quick responses guys :) . I ordered a pepper evo stock tonight based on what you guys mentioned, as well as the fact it is lighter and shorter in length. Well that, and plus I think it will look gorgeous...Can't wait for my new bbl and stock, thanks again guys.

What is wrong with the tacticool for off hand shooting? I was thinking of ordering one for my Savage Mk.II / Shilen frankenstein project, but I don't want to have a stock that won't let me comfortably shoot offhand as well as bench work.

Mark,
I personally found it wasn't easy to carry comfortably and didn't shoulder as nicely as the Evo stock either.
It just felt cumbersome and heavy.
From a bench on a bag or bi-pod....no problem.
Through the bush....not for me.

I'd go tacticool. It's what I have on my shorty.

I moved my sling posts to the side of my stock so that it would lay flat across the front of me in a "tactical" style, which in turn made it very comfortable to carry while foraging through the brush looking for partridge and rabbit. And small game hunting and shooting offhand is the main purpose of the rifle at this time, but I do like it taking it to the bench as well for when I just want to shoot off a brick :D ;)

Boss went a little overboard with the US Optics scope on the 12". But the Hogue Overmold with our 12" heavy is a pretty slick setup.

The tacticool full sizes the gun. I prefer something lighter for off hand shooting, such as the stock and barrel on my CZ 452 American. Not to say it wouldn't be suitable, that's just my personal preference for something more compact and light. The tacticool is a really large piece of wood.

Sounds like it is mostly just a large, heavy stock. My offhand shooting is done at metallic silhouette targets and other practicing at the range, so a heavy stock is no issue for me as I am not carrying the gun far. It already weighs well over 8lbs with a Boyds thumbhole stock, so a bit more isn't a problem. I was more worried that it was uncomfortable for the offhand position. If that is not an issue, then I am ok with it.

No such thing as long as the magnification range works for your uses. Better glass is always better glass. But you can end up with a really pricey rimfire rifle in the end. ;)

That's basically what made my decision for me. I figured if I was going to build a shorty, I might as well get a shorter/lighter stock to match. I'm really liking the 10/22 (my first one) and once this one is done, I'll probably end up doing something a little more tactical like the NEA build or Jt's (by the way I'm obsessed with both those builds, they both really convinced me I NEEDED a ruger). Can't wait for my NEA bbl and boyds to show up now.

Enjoy you Evo... you've made a fine choice! :)

RadMan, that's pretty sweet! How much did that all cost you? And what components did you use?

Barrel?
Cocking handle?
scope?

Thanks, now if I could only shoot it as accurately as it looks (I'm a marksmanship noob)

Here's the list ($$ are by memory, taxes/shipping in):

- Ruger 10/22 Carbine (Basic 10//22, $260)

- Boyd's SS Evolution stock in Nutmeg colour ($150)
- Green Mountain 19in Heavy Taper Barrel (Blued) ($185)
- Superior Concepts Tactical Charging Handle (Matt Black) ($50)
- Volquartsen Custom Take Down Action Screw ($7)
- Volquartsen Custom Exact Edge Extractor ($13)
- Tasco TG21042I 2.5-10x42mm Scope (Mil-Dot Illuminated) with basic rings ($100 ish)

Not cheap, but I really enjoy shooting it. Couple of notes:

a. My vision sucks and I'll be replacing the scope with more power, probably to 40x.
b. Was about to upgrade the hammer to Volquartsen as well, but rimfiresports no longer ships to Canada... :(

Besides that, I've only taken it to the range 3 times (also the 1st 3 times I have shot anything since I was 15ish) so practice practice practice!

All in all though, VERY happy with how it turned out.

Gorgeous rifle! I was really torn on what colour to get. I really like the nutmeg. I ended up going with the pepper though.

As you mentioned, rimfire sports no longer ships here, is there any other options for us?

Thanks!

Regarding where to get from, I'm considering Brownells State-side, though I'm still looking for a Canadian dealer if I can.

bits of peices in the lower mainland BC carries power customs goodies and some vq stuff and Barry is a great guy to deal with, he also carries green mountain barrels and revolution laminate stocks for the 10-22s

That's right! How could I forget about BITS... that's where I got my Barrel... I'll fire him off an email tonight...
