boyds stock and stevens 200. now what?

For those who remember looking at my post about stevens 200 and boyds stock,

I am finally home to have a good look at it. I am impressed with the quality of this product. My stevens model 200 in 7mm-08 now weighs in at a wopping 8 1/2 lbs:eek: I have not shot it yet, but im sure the groups should tighten up and it will have even less recoil. (will make another post or add to this one when I get a chance to shoot it.)

Now, I have been talking it over with blackdog on how to finish it. It is a pepper laminate. I could throw a few coats of tru-oil, or I could give it a coat of stain. Some guys put some pretty neat colors (red, blue, teal) stain on them then tru oil.

Blackdog figures it shouldn't look too "Artsy Fartsy." (LOL:p ) Do you guys have any suggestions? Either way, I am going to sand it down a bit to make it a little smoother feeling.

What should I do??????

Whichever finish you choose to use, don't use any of the usual thinners(paint thinner, varsol, etc). They have a nasty habit of turing that nice gray laminate to a shytty shade of green.:(
 
I hear ya. Varsol is definately out of the question. I hate that stuff. I have worked around it enough to know its bad for you. If they are no longer shipping to Canada, its a new policy because I got this stock in the last week of november.
 
I would go with the tru-oil. It should make the colour and grain come out without making it too shinny.
 
the toughest finish is to use an thinned two part epoxy and soak the wood until it won;t take anymore, then repeat until the wood is completely saturated. sand it down level to the wood and apply a thin coat of tru-oil. you can buy a sealer called S-1 Epoxy



and if you don;t get it checkered, skip the tru-oil and spray it with Rustoleum clear anti-skid floor paint

I don't know for a fact that Boyds won't ship to Canada anymore, it's just something I heard. Best way to find out would be to call and ask

I threw on a coat of tru oil about an hour ago. its still tacky and will check back on it in a hour. It darkened it up a little. I want to give it a glossy look when its done. I may put another coat on when this ones dry
 
I have been happy refinishing wood useing coats of tung oil .
Is tru oil a combination of linseed oil with some varnish ?
also how much was the stock if you dont mind me asking?
 
Well shes finished.

I went for the glossy look. After 4 0r 5 coats this is how she turned out. Who says that a stevens 200 is ugly now? Yours too can look just like this:p
