Collecting parts for my build and I was wondering about Boyd laminate stocks. I realize that there are some great options out there but for some reason I really like the look of Boyds AT1 thumbhole in one of the funky colours.

1) Are there any drawbacks to one of these stocks ?
2) Can they produce the foundation necessary for a good precision build.

BTW: The goal is a rifle that will shoot 1/2 minute. Now if I can shoot that well is another question lol....

I'm not a precision shooter so take my ad ice with a grain on salt. I have used a few Boyd's and with good bedding have taken factory guns from 1.5 moa to well below MOA. That said a large part of that gain was with decent handloads bit still shows that there is potential there. There is a company that makes a really nice pillar bedding system and it's fairly cheap (25$) comes with compound adjustable pillars and a nice set of instructions. I think I have one left of I can find it I will get you the name.

Buddy put a Tikka T3 with benchmark barrel 6mmBR in a Boyds pro varmint - worked great, was a shooter - saw quite a few 1/2-3/4" 200yd groups....

The stocks work very well.. and with current manf, the inletting is very good .... usually. Proper bedding and pillars are a very good idea.

not a fan of the At1 styling ... I prefer the provarmint.

Can you make an accurate precision rifle using one of these stocks?

I'm glad someone started a thread on this. I am also eyeing up the At One Thumbhole. Looks like a slick stock. just hope it isn't too heavy.

I did a build with the AT-One for target shooting. El Cheapo Axis in '06 I had that I wanted play with. Got the target grips as an option

Really like it, but I would go provarmint with the optional adjustable comb if I had to do it again. Really like all of the adjustments on the AT-One, but with the modifications I wanted to do, I found the plastic forend annoying and uncomfortable. There is also very little meat on the fore end and when I enlarged the barrel channel to swap a Varmint contour (I would have gone heavier but I knew it would not fit) I got really concerned about the amount of wood remaining and the strength. The pro varmint have more material to work from what I see. But if you just want to drop your action in for a hunting rig, this is a nice stock. I just feel the bedding part is needed for good accuracy. There are also a couple of edges around the grip that could be smoother, but this should not be any different on the PV.

That being said, it's a very nice project rifle after I got pillars and action devcon bedded, got a McGowan prefit an Timney Trigger from Jerry with 20MOA mount, It's shown some very nice potential so far in my load development. It's not in any ways a Manners or a McMilland, but the price tag on it make it a good value for the money.

Last winter I had a Tikka built up with a Varmint profile barrel, in 260 Rem, with a Boyd's pro-varmint stock.

A friend bedded the action. The rifle works well but a bit on the light side ( trying to figure out recoil management with this one) for bench shooting, will hold < 1 moa for 10 shots at 330 yards.

I ordered the Royal Blue laminate, it is actually grey and purple. I rechecked the order and sure enough that is what I ordered according to the stock code.

It showed up in ~ 10 days and was reasonably priced.

I have a Boyd's laminate on a savage ...with rough use(strapped to my back on sleds and quads) the action kept coming loose in the stock.
I installed pillars and bedded the action...working great now.

I think with bedding, and maybe pillars you'll get what your wanting out of it. You may be fine without the bedding, but its actually fairly simple to do and worth the small amount of time and cost.

I didn't notice any improvement with a Savage 10 placed in a Boyd's Prairie stock. The accustock from Savage was just as good.

But it looked a lot nicer!

Like others have said, maybe glass bedding would help that, but I haven't ever tried to do that yet.

I have had a couple of the pro varmints in the past, both were bedded with devcon and and pillars installed, both had adjustable cheek piece, both shot awesome! I would not hesitate to use the pro varmint. The AT 1 on the other hand does not fit my liking, and the few I have seen I had concerns with the plastic in the forend and the pistol grip area. Let us know how you make out if you go that route.

I Just put a Boyd's Classic Nutmeg Laminate on my Vanguard II in 257 Weatherby.
Definitely a very good fit. Dropped in and no extra fitting needed. Now to see how it shoots.
Dave.
