I am pondering the idea of ordering a Boyds Prarie Hunter stock for my Savage 110 in .300wm. Does anyone have one of those stocks that can comment on it.
Do you guys think that is a worth while upgrade or just a waste of money.
They have 2 colours Pepper Laminate and Nutmeg. I think I am leaning towards Nutmeg. Also the brown leather sling on it now would look better with the nutmeg.

I just swapped out the scope and rings with nicer stuff than in the pic. My current stock is in really nice shape except for 2 scuffs.

Here is a pic of the gun now.

Why not call or e-mail them? I'm sure they've been asked before and since, I think, they supply stocks to Savage they should be knowledgeable on which models fit which stocks.

When I was looking for a stock for my .22 they had explicit instructions on the site as to which screws etc. you'd have to order from Savage to make mods and such.

I like the pepper one

What you have looks far better than any plastic.
I don't know if I would alter that rifle's stock.
Put the $$ to something else.
My pennies to you.

I agree the current stock is not that bad. I just find it doesn't have a lot of character (stamped checkering etc). I was going to sell it and buy a higher end rifle but I am thinking it may be better to sink a few bucks into this one to make it nicer.

Why don't you concentrate on making it shoot nicer. Develop a personal load for it, that'll make you feel prouder of it than any stock could.

Thats going to happen anyway. I'm more looking for a reason to make we want to keep it more by inproving the quality.

What does the bush you hunt in look like? I know that pepper stock would be perfect camo for the jackpine forests of central BC in the fall.

If I was going to get a new stock for a favorite hunting rifle I, personally, would pick that one. Plus it looks cool.

Laminated stocks are heavy. Heavier then the stock you plan to replace.

I put a Boyds on a 375Mag, but I cut the forend shorter, hollowed it out as well as the butt end. I like it.

I would be scared to hollow it out. i would worry that it would make it unstable or balance strange.

you do like the Boyds though?

It has held up just fine on a 375. I'm sure your rifle will be fine.

As as far as balance goes, I took weight from both the front and back of the stock and it balances fine as well. No problems either way. They are heavy stocks! They need to lose weight.

My original plan was to get a Mark 2 Savage FV and replace the stock with a tacticool from Boyde's. I didn't like the plastic trigger guard the FV came with but they give the part numbers for the screws you need to order (and I think even the phone # to call to get the steel trigger guard from savage).

I figured I'd save about $100 building it myself.

I saw Wanstalls had a BTSV (###y stainless laminate h-bar just down the road) so I bought that one. I love it but like you said the laminate is heavy. Since it's just a bench shooting rifle I don't care. Maybe take it 'yote hunting but that's it.

For hunting moose/deer I have a 116 FCSS in 7mm rem with the accustock. It's stainless and plastic and other than it's great accuracy and the fact I don't have to oil it every time I come in out of the rain, it's ugly. I love it too.

It's all what you want out of it, man. Pick what YOU like and go with it.

I just got off the phone with boyds. They said thier stocks are made with the factory barrel contour. Mine is a factory barrel but is quite lite. he said if it was a feather weight of some sort it mingt not fit right.

The rifle would be for Moose maybe bear or deer hunting. The weigth issue has me wondering if its a good idea.

Boyd's has a light weight option where they do just that but it costs a few$. I lightened mine by milling some from the bottom of barrel channel and drilling some holes in the but stock. The stock is on a 300 WM and I am confident its is plenty strong. Some people also remove wood form the outside if they feel the stock is too chunky.
The stock did require some minor fitting around the trigger and guard but was essentially a drop in.

Well i'm not too sure how accurate this is but I weighed my rifle. Weighed myself then weighed me and the rifle. My scale weighs to 0.2lbs. I got 7lbs exactly.

The boyds stock is 2.7 lbs. I should take my rifle appart and try to weigh just the stock.

I wish i could actually see and hold the boyds stock that would make it a lot easier decision.

Are you sure it's a 110? I looked for it on the Savage site and couldn't find the exact model.

ht tp://www.savagearms.com/firearms/models/ give it a go and see what you can find. They list the exact weights of them here.

Any idea what year it is?

Yeah it is a 110. I found one in the Rifle packages on that site that is close. Says 7.5lbs. Mine is a bit older so wont be exact. I know it is over 15 years old.

If you're going to be packing it any distance I don't think I'd go any heavier (which the laminate stock would be) unless the recoil bothers you. An extra .5 pound might not be a bad thing then. ;)
