Boys and bear hunting

My oldest son and myself spent the weekend up at our lake lot in the northern foothills on a father-son exploring adventure. We kept it light and fun and spent hours checking creeks, looking for frogs, catching butterfly’s and having some elk smokies over the fire during the day. We put on a lot of miles on the lease roads cruising looking for feeding bears. On our last evening we spotted a bear down a small gas line, after a quick look through the binos I was convinced it was a smaller bear but we really could only see it’s back. My son wanted me to go shoot it in the worst way but I told him we don’t shoot small bears. After much back and forth he won when we came to an agreement that we would at least go see how close we could get. I brought my custom Remington 700 358STA just in case. As we got closer I was still thinking it was a smaller bear and not what we where looking for, but he still was very positive that we should take this bear. After some more thought I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t about the size of the bear and more about the expierence with my son by my side. So we closed the gap to about 40 yards and when the boar went broadise I fired hitting him good behind the shoulder. Bear dropped but got back up and took off for the bush on the side of the cutline. I fIred again, hitting him tight behind the shoulder. Again he dropped but was still moving so I fired one last round again behind the shoulder. He was now down and out. So still thinking this was a smaller bear I was quite shocked when we walked up to him and realized his size and how good of bear he actually is.
All around it was another great adventure with my son and a memory we will talk about for years to come. He has been in on 4 successful bears now by the age of 6, he’s going to be hard on the critters when he gets older.

You're obviously a great dad. He's as proud of you as you are of him. Hmm. takes me back 65 years.

hunting with Kids has its challenges but the outcome is extremely rewarding. Pack lots of snacks, take time to find cool sticks and rocks and anything they can torture there sister with. Two moose in all out fight are much quieter than two kids walking down a moss covered cutline. Finding deer and moose sheds usually cost me a few bucks per antler to keep them focused on the task at hand. Carry lots of lens cleaner, small fingers always seem to find there way on to the objective lens

I think you picked a good hunt for the two of you. Cruising in the truck probably helped to keep him interested longer without getting tried.

P.S. great looking family, they all look like they will be hunters!

i love this story...gotta ask a question of everyone though...i didnt think we were allowed to take them hunting till they had a lic of their own...at least here in ontario.

that makes them 14 here. cant hunt without lic and hunting includes spotting, shooting, flushing...etc.

honest question...not at all being a ####. would love to take my boys

It's 14 to get their hunters apprentice card, which allows then to actually hunt with you sharing your rifle. You can take then hunting under that age but they can not aid in shooting, calling or dogging.

Alberta’s law are similar, I can’t get the kids to push bush but the can accompany me at any time. I think if the wardens made an issue of this they are likely antihunting and I would gladly see them in court. Staring the next generation is likely the most important thing we can do to ensure our heritage lives on and the traditions stay alive. My kids don’t have tv or video games for the simple reason of wanting them to be outdoors.

Thanks guys. My understanding was same but they also couldn't "spot" for me...hard to prove I didn't see the animal first but you know...just wanna stay on the right side of the wardens. Looking forward to getting them out.
