BP 45cal working load Information

Just picked up a a Hawken 45cal and have absolutely no idea what kind of working load to start shooting at. Anyone who could help me out with a " pet " load for a round ball would be greatly appreciated.

The load I used in my .45, was 60g of 3f and a .440 round ball. If you are looking for a Deer hunting load, I would start with 50g of 3f and work your way up. Try using a felt wad under the patched ball, to protect the patch from blow out. If you don't have a felt wad just use a folded up patch rammed down on top of the powder.
 
Patches blow out because of a low thread count (poor quality material) Go to your local fabric store and pick up some pillow ticking. After you fire a shot look for the patch, you will see that it holds together just fine. I have never tried silk patches but heard that these these work the best ,but alot more expensive(stick with pillow ticking), have fun with that new smoke pole

the world of patches

finding the right material requires a few considerations...thickness is one...I remember visiting the material store with my micrometer...amazing differences in thickness...an other consideration is for the composition of the patch material...a test to ensure it is natural fiber is to burn a sample and examine the ashes...gummy would mean polyester or that sort of synthetic...so many variable...stock up when you find the right material,,,

Reading the patch...give you something to do as you walk up to your target...caution, may get addictive.
