Just want to have some input from those of you who reload black powder cartridge. Some search on the net reveal that many people use magnum primers (for a better ignition) while as many use standard primer (because BP is easy to ignite anyway).

I plan on loading .45 colt for cowboy action, using the real stuff, not substutes.

Thanks for your help!

Standard should be fine.
I found with black powder the tricky part was to get the powder compression just right, you can get vary little velocity spared with black.

I use Large Pistol primers in almost all my BP cartridge loadings, all handgun carts., the .32/40, 38/55,45/70, 45/100. The theory here, at least in the rifle cartridges is that black powder is easy to ignite and you don't need a powerful primer moving the charge ahead in the millisecond before the main charge ignites. I don't know if this theory has been proven but those LP primers work best for me.
