The plug pressed in and 2" ball hitch cascabel threaded on. Ready for the first weld. After turning down the weld the last piece (not shown) will be sleeved over and welded. After that the touch hole will be drilled and trunions welded. .

I don't understand why you did not thread the breach plug and breach end on the barrel so that you could screw the plug in. That has two benefits ; it allows you to remove the plug and fill the recessed plug with the powder charge and more importantly, I think that threads are less brittle than welds and have the potential to last longer without breaking

If you can remove the breech then I believe it can be loaded from the breech and becomes a firearm if I understand correctly.

I think that breach loading or muzzle loading is of little significants; if it is fired by a fuse or powder in a touch hole, then it is an antique. If you are not shooting projectiles out of it, it is a signaling device and I would assume be exempt from registration and licensing under CC 84-3. If it were used in a crime then it becomes a firearm

Was this made from a hydraulic cylinder?

Also, how much powder do you use?

This is my 50mm mortar I made many yrs ago .
Works great with golf balls ,among other things ;)

IT LIVES!

I went with welding because it's what I know. I should say that the machining was done by a friend and I wanted to keep it as simple for him to make as possible. All pieces were scrap so we had to work with what we had. Overall I am happy with my first attempt. The final piece actually sleeves over the barrel a bit. Welded here and at the back where the chamber plug extends, not to mention the first weld underneath, make it quite strong. I am aware there are arguements both ways over threaded vs welded but I felt safe going with welded.

Now what sort of proof load do I test it with?

I made a golf ball cannon out of pvc at my buddy's camp. We used hair spray. You have to shave the golf balls a bit to make them more oblong rather than round. Trial and error dictated the use of a wad - a small piece of paper towel worked. We could shoot through waferboard at around 10-15 yards.

Eventually, when we ran out of clay pigeons for the skeet launcher, we were firing potatoes up into the air and blasting them with our shotguns. My buddy kept trying to get me to put my hockey equipment on so he could video himself shooting me with the potato cannon, but I wouldn't fall for that.

Cannon

PS - mooncoon - I absolutely love the rubber chicken flak cannon
