Smokless powder or substute black powder in a charcoal burner

I WOULD NEVER EVER use smokless powder in a black powder firearm this includes cartridge or front stuffers. You can however use a black powder substitute. Triple 7 or Pyrodex will work for you just fine as it has the same burn characteristics as holy black. Triple 7 is a bit hotter than black powder so cut your charges back by 15%. You can also use Trip7 or Pyrodex in a flintlock if you use 5 grains of black powder down the muzzle first then follow up with your charge of trip 7 or pyrodex less 5 grains. You must use real black in the pan. This binary charge is a way of stretching your black powder. Others have posted that Pyrodex will rust your bore. I believe this is true because Pyrodex contains perclorates which cause rusting and is very hard to remove from your bore if U have pitting. I was also told that perclorates bind with the steel. Do not know if that is true or not as I am not a chemist.

Corrosion in the old cartridge guns came from two sources: black powder residue and corrosive primers which may in fact have been more corrosive than the powder residue itself.

I have to disagree with this part of your post
As long as the pressure is within the proper limits of the cartridge gun there is no problem using smokeless power , be it shotgun or cartridge rifle.
IMR PB, 4756, 7625, 4759, Unique, and many others all have data available for them that yield perfectly safe pressures in BP cartridge guns , and are used every day in Schuetzen matches and and others where black powder is not mandatory
Lyman in fact has a section in their manual for the 45/70 for low pressure smokeless loads for the Springfield trap door !
