I have been told the same thing before , and also that modern plastic wads and hulls do not burn with black powder .I have some hornets nest that I collected just for shotgun wading but have yet to use it. Have LOTS of circle fly wads. I soak them in bear grease so no chance of smouldering bits and, more importantly (to me) is it cleans the vote when loading snd keeps the fouling soft. Besides, if you are using an heavy over powder wad, the cushion wad (regardless of what it is made of) can’t “smoulder” as the flame front never gets past the over powder wad to ignite the cushion wad.
No question that BP will melt plastic hulls. While I have never used plastic wads with BP, with a properly fitted over powder wad, a plastic wad SHOULD not see heat to cause melting. However, having never actually tried it, I will defer to anyone that HAS done it and seen plastic fouling. You have my curiosity up. If you have an understanding of how, exactly, a plastic wad can melt when separated from the flame front by a solid over powder wad please share. Having difficulty wrapping my head around that but am eager to learn.I have been told the same thing before , and also that modern plastic wads and hulls do not burn with black powder .
However I have experienenced the opposite , tight fitting lubed wads or not so will continue to be vigilant.
