BP Substitute in a Flinter?

Black powder is best. You could use 10 grains of 3f at the bottom of the charge and a sub for the rest of the charge and 3f or best yet 4f for pan powder. By doing that, a pound of black powder would last a long time.
 
i use pyrodex 3f in my TC hawken flinter and 4f goex for pan primer

i have used 3F pyro in the pan but with less then fair results... but my TC lock is quite small and with a 1/2" flint there's not much surface area in the pan... so others may have better luck who have a larger lock.
 
substituts likely wont work well in the pan. from what i understand they need more heat than a couple sparks can generate.
 
Ignition in the pan is the key...

4f in the pan is where i am going....plan to use a small powder dispenser that drop 4 grains at the time (ordered from track of the wolf)...as for the main charge...I use 3f BP and would not hesitate to replace it with Pyrodex RS.....I used it for years with my Hawkens rifle, 50 cal, cap lock...for me the key with flinters is the ignition in the pan...the rest takes care of itself.

I have the TOTW 4g pan primer and also drop 4f into my hawken. I tried Pyrodex in the main charge to test it but there is a long (in relative terms) delay in the shot going off. Flash pause whoosh bang instead of Flash bang.

yup that about sum's up pyrodex... click/flash/pause.... :eek: /boooom
 
I have never tried Pyrodex in my flintlock mainly because I could not get consistent ignition in my caplock, I got bad hangfires with it. Now I only use real black powder in both though Pyrodex does work great in my inline muzzleloader.

I would much rather stick to blackpowder, but I have to drive for almost an hour to get some vs. going to LeBaron's 10 minutes away and getting some Pyrodex or 777. (They don't carry blackpowder.)

On that note, I had some absolutely trememdous performance shooting my caplock Shenandoah rifle last weekend; shot Hornady .490 RB with a .015 patch over 70 grains equiv. of 777. I have never experienced such a good level of accuracy and consistency out of that rifle - 2-3 inch groups (open sights) at 100 yards, and I even managed to make a headshot on a groundhog at 75 yards!

I was also able to consistently bang the 200 yard gong at the rifle range with a little bit of Kentucky Windage. Quite impressed.:rockOn:
