BPCR with gas checks?

Just getting going with a 45/90. I’m not going to be competing, so wondering if I could use gas checks to simplify loading and possibly keep things cleaner between shots. Forgot to mention it’s a Pedersoli sharps and with straight black.

I've known one or two shooters who were insistent that a gas check made a difference for their 32-40. With the pressure levels of black powder, I personally think that fiber or cork wads serve the same purpose.

If you are hoping to get away from using a black powder lube the gas check will not replace that at all or really have any effect on fouling.

Nope no problem with fouling. I’m using spg and blow tubing. Stays soft and cleans up super easy. Just though it might be easier to load as in one less variable and hold more powder. Actually I just annealed my brass and now have a compression die. Well under 100 rounds down range so just starting to figure it out.

I don't think there is any advantage at BP velocities. Might make accuracy worse if the base doesn't bump up well to engage the rifling.

Yes that is one of my concerns. .458 checks and .459 bullets. But that’s why I’m asking. Shot lots of hard cast gas checked in my guide guns, but no experience with soft bullets. Just need more bench time.

BCPR rules do not allow gas check. You are on the wrong path with that plan. At Black Powder pressure, you want a bullet alloy that will upset the bullet base to seal the bore.
Here, we allow duplex loading - this keep the bore clean between shot, with lead bullet and the main benefit is more velocities.
Check the rules, check what the best are doing.

Gas checks are definitely not necessary in BPCR. Once you get these rifles figured out you'll be amazed at the accuracy you can achieve with bullets matched to the rifle' chamber, and the correct alloy. Be sure to use quality powder and bullet lube to reduce the amount of time you spend figuring this stuff out. How you manage fouling ( blow tube, or wiping ), is also a very big part of it. That becomes more important the further you shoot.

Chris.
