Bracket on the left side of TRGs? What is it for?

On the inside of a Klein bottle
OK TRG owners, what is this for? I am talking about the bracket on the left hand side, at the end of the stock which permits something to mount along the same axis as the barrel, and in the vertical plane. I have seen several TRGs, but today was the first time I noticed it. Now I can’t find a TRG photo without it, and no explanation as to what it is for.
