After removing the flash hider on my m305, I decided to apply gun blue on the spot weld before putting back to FH. I mounted the gun on a vise and filed off the rough edge. I then used masking tape to isolate the spot from other areas.

I sprayed brake cleaner on it and noticed the parkerized finish came off. I rinsed it off immediately and let it dry. I didn't worry too much as I would have applied gun blue around that area anyway and installing the FH would have covered it.

As I prepared to apply gun blue, I removed the masking tape and was dismayed to see that the brake cleaner had seeped under the masking tape. There's a wide streak that runs about 3 inches along the barrel  Using brake cleaner was such a bad idea :nest:

Any suggestions as to what I can do now? Do I have to refinish the whole barrel?

Coat the metal with heavy oil, like motor oil. This should fix it right up. Park acts like a sponge it holds oil to protect the steel.

Using brake cleaner on a parked surface should not hurt anything, but some do such a great job removing grease and oil it leaves the surface a whitish color. So if some of the cleaner runs down the parked surface it turns it lighter than the surface it did not touch. By putting back the oil it restores the finish.

There are 2 types of brake cleaners, one is perchloroethlene and the other is a mixture of alcohols, solvents like toluene, xylene, etc.

Neither of which will harm parkerizing. It probably just removed blackish oil/grease from the parked finish and made it "look" like it removed the finish.
