I don't want to get the barrel threaded.
The 700p is not threaded, right?
I would rather have a clamp on brake not to alter the value (I don't know any good gunsmith here, and would rather not alter the rifle for resale value)

Coretac clamp on brake seems good, and also grizzly defcon1 seems good for cheaper

Any suggestions?

Correct......The 700P does not have a threaded barrel........

Personally I would just thread the barrel.............Done properly you won't hurt the resale value.........it's just a Rem. 700P, not a collectors rifle...........and if you want top notch performance, you will be changing out the factory barrel anyways.........

Plus I don't like clamp on brakes.......;)

Mmm, that's a point. If I am to change the barrel one day, I might not be able to get one with the exact same contour to fit my clamp on brake, so it would be wasted.
(or is the contour of the 700P at muzzle pretty standard, or easy to get on a replacement barrel?)

Getting it threaded would allow me to use that brake on any future barrel.

You can get replacement barrels with the same contour...............but threaded brakes look so much cleaner as well..........;)

I like the look of a clamp on brake.

Agreed, friend has a brake that looks identical on a .300, it is a foul beast. I spotted for him on our 500-1,000 yard range and got filthy and concussed by the muzzle blast. No brakes on anything under .338 Lapua required in my opinion. .308 in a 700 Police is a complete pussy cat, I'd skip the brake. :)

You're shooting in good dirt then. Even the side ported brake I had on an M14 long range rigs caused enough dust I had to wait between shots, and little to no notable recoil reduction as it's only a .308.

Like all things, there are well designed efficient brakes and crap brakes that have no engineering what so ever cheap and easy to make.
The only commonality is that ALL brakes make the gun seem louder to the shooter, again some worse than others.
