Got a brand new 597 and trying to sight it. I have pushed the rear sight as far to the right as I can and it still is not far enough. anyone else ever have this problem. can I fix it at home or do I just bring back the gun?

Sorry to hear you bought one. I can't think of a shoddier gun than the 597, chinese stuff included. Take it back and try to get a refund.

my buddy (targettarget) had a 597 tvp. the thing shot like a shot gun... long story short he sent it back and remington gave him his money back. i sudgest doing the same. remington's quality has droped off realy bad. i used to want a 700 remington about 6 years ago. now i wouldnt take one if it was free.

:agree: If you got one that isn't a jam-o-matic, you got a good one.:runaway:

Make sure the front sight is nice and tight as well.

As for the other reviews, no probs with mine in the 6 months that i've had it after replacing the extractor with a Volqs... getting close to 1k since the last clean and still runs like clockwork

Send the silly thing back to Remington and get yourself a Cooey 64 or something old and reliable. But if it goes bang every time you pulled the trigger, you have a good one and it is worth your while to find a way to make it shoot straight.

I MUST BE VERY LUCKY THEN, I have had 3, one being a magnum and never had a malfunction that wasn't ammo related (ie. dud primer).
I know some people have had probelms with them, most of those people would have problems using chewing gum as well.

Inspect your front sight as well, make sure it isn't bent. Try different ammo. Does it shoot decent groups, even though the point of impact is skewed? Or does it just spray all over the place?
Lastly mount a scope on that rifle (as God intended) and see if it works better. If no luck call Remington

:agree: I also have three (1 is my wifes and 1 is a magnum) and not a problem in the 6-7 years I have had the mag. Love em!!!! Accurate and reliable out of the box no upgrades needed but you can always get the VQ hammer and extractor :D:D I should add that one is a TVP as well!!!!!!

I watched a friend of mine put around 500 rounds through his with one problem..
I was on the receiving end of the hot brass:kickInTheNuts:
Problem was solved in no time.

Hi..I have had a 597 for about 4 years and i have had alot of problems wih it.
mostly jamming and stove piping alon with so many missfeeds i lost count.
i tried everybrand of .22 ammo to see it if was that, and yes partly it was.
remington ammo is garbage DO NOT USE IT. the heads of the ammo was lose and jamed while feeding. winchester and the HV ammo were the best. also i have about 10 ma for it 7 ten rounders all from remington and i had to hand file about .100 of an inch from the back and file a slight angle on it because the mags are so losly made the bolt was hitting the mags. same with the plastic 25 rounders from remington. which also failed qualitly control. because not one seem to be the same size so they get stuck in the mag well. and the iron sights were so misaligned that i just through a red dot and or a scope. but i agree its well balanced, now with the mags modified it feed flawlessly. and it hold good groups downrange. but if i had to do it again.
I would have just got a RUGER 10 22. plus there are little to no accessories for this rifle.

If this rifle has excessive jamming check the rear guide rod set screws 9 times out of 10 it's way to tight. If not check the version of mag you have due to the fact that version 2 had some Q.C. issue's. Check rimfirecentral dot com for more info. Also as for the shooting with iron's, the front sight is missed aligned. Try taping it to the direction it is shooting too. (I.E. shoot's 5 inches to far left. Tap it 1mm to the left) Also remember when doing this type of adjustment...
Less is best!
Further more this would be highly recommended to be done at the range were you would have a chance to sight it in properly to the ammo that you will use.

I have one too, bought in 2004, must have put 1000 rounds into (mostly woldcat) . I had less then 25 jam for sure. I had more non firing ammo then jammed. shoot good with a Red Dot perfect for plinking Cans and all kind of stuff
