Brand new Marlin 1895GBL arrived in rough shape - would you return it?

I really don't understand some of these dealers. They know VERY WELL that the Remlins have had all kinds of problems. They should be checking the firearm before shipping it. If you were to walk in to their store, they would pull it out of the box and you would get a chance to look at it and cycle it. Since they don't have to pay someone to attend to you at the counter, they could at least pay someone to check it out before shipping. Totally unacceptable service and I would be blasting the store for shipping junk.

If you bought it in Ontario, I can guess where you got it. No one seems to have stock unless one dealer a couple of weeks ago. There was one last week and it is now gone... wondering if that's the one you got.

This reminds me of the big three auto manufacturers in the 80's. More specifically, the dealers. Didn't give a crap about the quality and did PDI with their eyes closed. Took them a beating from the Japanese to smarten them up. Speaking of the Japanese, my BLR lightweight 81 308 is made in Japan and the quality and smoothness is excellent.
 
Talk about a load of BS in this thread. In the early 90's bought a Marlin 25mn that you could not close the bolt on due to such a crappy job of bedding...a Winchester 1300 that you could not close the action on due to crappy bedding. Jump to today and complaints still exist. Guess what, Marlin though under Remington is still the same, they really don't give a rats butt hole about the quality they ship out. Oh, Heck, I saw a shipment of Remington 870 410ga shotguns shipped to a dealer and not one had a straight barrel. You would have loved the Auto Mags sold that didn't function or the Auto Ordnance 10mm that all had bent frames after a 100 rounds. I could go on and on with manufacturer failures over the years. Bottom line, manufacturers for the most part don't give a hoot about quality...well North American Manufacturers anyway.
 
You gotta be kidding me. This is not a new rifle, this is obviously used rifle.

This is not a new rifle you have paid for. Its either a mistake they should rush to fix or its "wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain." Send it back to the dealer for a full refund. If they show ANY hesitation tell them to look up what "fraud" is.
 
This rifle must be new old stock. When will stores start selling the new rifles made in New York. Anything made from 2007 till 2012 in Conneticut has issues. Those were the years that the Marlin employees were told they would be losing their jobs as the company was bought and was moving.
 
I would try to return to the store of purchase .Unfortunately the system sucks and you will send it away to Gravel Agencies to assess

The best of Gravel Agencies is June Rondeau ask to deal with her ,I know this because I sent 6 Marlins back to Gravel a few years back

The rifle is on the way back to where it came from. Thanks everyone for your input. I called the retailer and they were happy to take it back. I'm hoping they have another one they can send me that is in acceptable condition. I also called Marlin. No explanation or apology was offered - response was basically "never heard of a problem like that, take it back to the store". They did tell me they test fire all the rifles at the factory, which could possibly explain (though not justify) the marks on the loading gate. I'm not sure that the rifle was otherwise used. It was still sealed in factory packaging when it arrived to me. The flaws in the wood are widespread and their pattern does not look like wear marks or physical damage to me. I think its just bad wood/workmanship.
 
Marlington are saddely the GM of the 80-90, they may have gone to the non returned point, as of today GM can hardly keep the head out of the water, the same path awaite this rifle compagny, a perfectly honorable compagny burnt down to the ground for profit sake... This is pityfull... JP.
 
Looks really rough, I would not accept it since it is very poor compared to the SBL I just bought which was made in June 2013. The gun looks to have been used to be in that state. What is the two letter code on the barrel on the left hand side and does it have REP on the right hand side of the barrel?

Gun has gone back and I'm waiting for news. The barrel was made in North Haven. Didn't check the letter code but I think it must have been REP. Where did you get your SBL?
 
Update: heard back from the retailer, they said they have several 1895GBLs in stock and they all look like the one they sent me (!). They offered me a refund. Apparently they are still planning to sell these damaged guns at full retail price, which I find to be pretty appalling. If anyone is looking to buy a Marlin, inspect it in person first! Apparently you can't trust big box online retailers. Not sure how I feel about shopping with these guys again after finding out their stance on this issue.

The dealer has offered you a refund. It will be a full refund I hope. Given the state of the product take the money and run. It doesn't sound as though they are giving you a hard time about the refund.
