Off the shelf, brand new, what would be your choice today? And what caliber would you prefer?

My choice would be a blue and walnut "Ruger Hawkeye" in 300 Win Mag. For an off the shelf rifle, today, I think it's as close to a pre-64 M70 as I would ever be happy with.

kinda have the hankering for an Rem 700 XCR in .375 H&H....

maybe a kimber 84 montana in .308.....

that should change by morning though.

Kimber 84M Selet grade in either 7mm-08 or .308 Win. These rifles are even closer to a pre/64 Winchester.

Kimber LongMaster in .308. Match grade barrel / action / trigger / nice wood for about $1300.00.
.308 has to be one of the best calibers. Accurate / moderate recoil / good selection of factory loads if you are not a hand loader. A hunting round that will handle most game in this country.

Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in 6.5x55 SE.

Sako 85, with stainless on walnut in 300 win mag, with a 4-14x44 stainless zeiss scope.

My first new rifle in tooooooo long.

Normally I'd say a Remington 700 CDL or synthic/stainless model, probably 7m/m mag (problem Rem-mag). Saying that however, if only available with that locking/safety device, I'd probably holdout for NIB/used model.
