Just got my "brand new" Remington 597 in the mail from Cabelas- popped it open and discovered it is definitely not new, it has handling marks, GSR & some wear on the muzzle.

OK - not a big deal, though I looked closer & it appears that it may have had an in battery discharge!! There are scratches on the receiver that look like someone was trying to force a round out of the chamber with a screwdriver! some kind of crud on the bolt and in the chamber/receiver that looks possibly organic? Also the charging handle is loose ~ is it supposed to be?

It's going back, the damn thing had a "safety inspected" tag sealing the box - obviously not!

Any thoughts as to what may have happened here, what that crud might be and/or/if the bolt is supposed to be loose like that? Any ammunition I have when I call Cabela's back would be appreciated.

-thanks

Yikes that's not good at all. Have not heard of Cabelas doing that before. I was going to pick one of those Rem 597's up. I think I will go into the store now to make sure it doesn't look like that haha. Is it possible it was a show gun and they just stuffed it in a box and shipped it off? Hope it gets sorted out for you.

I have bought that exact scoped combo from cabelas. It was in perfect condition. Return it and get a replacement - I'm sure it will be fine.

One word of advice: Purchase the Remington Branded rail that they sell for $12 and get a nice set of weaver style rings. You'll be much happier in the long run!

That rifle is the cheapest 22 I own and it's among the most accurate and reliable. The recent production ones are great.

If you want weaver style rings I would forgo the Remington rail in favor of this one

It slips over the dovetail so that there is no possibility of stripping out the screws which I've heard has been known to happen with the 597 as the aluminum receiver is quite thin.

Well, the good news is that I can return it without having to pay shipping, there is a return mailing label in the box...

When I spoke to them, the guy said he had only seen that happen once & that they come straight from Remington ... & he had no idea why Remington would ship a used gun...

it's nice that Cabela's took care of it so easily, for some reason I was expecting a fight...

I like to save $$ buying online as do many others. Buying a rifle online is one thing I cannot bring myself to do however....gotta hold it!

I found similar "crud" on what I assume is an lubrication port for the extractor on the 597 I bought at BassPro about 5 months ago. I thought it was some kind of grinding compound so I just cleaned it up and went plinkin away. Surprising but doesn't seem to have done any harm.
