Just got back from Target Sports Center bringing with me my very first handgun!!!

Two questions, first is there some trick to get the frame tool out of the grip? The manual says turn it 1/4 turn and pull straight down but no matter how hard I twist, I cannot get it to turn at all! I do this with the slide locked back and the magazine taken out. Secondly, with the slide locked back, is it normal for the barrel to be a tad bit loose? When the slide is forward the barrel seems locked down and will not budge, but with that slide back I can wiggle the exposed barrel a bit.

Thank in advance for your answers!

That frame tool is a bear to remove until it gets used a bit more. You may need some sort of mechanical assistance like gentle use of a plier or similar but its a real ##### to remove initially. Theres no real secret, its just like they say in the manual, but trying to get it to turn is a chore. Its not really useful unless you need to change grip size but one you try the gun, you will love it..Dont worry about the barrel. Totally normal
Cheers
dB

THANK YOU for the quick response .. now comes the 2 months waiting for my clubs ATT course at the end of Jan and then a month for the paperwork to go through :)

At least I can work on my finger control? Gonna have to go get some snap-caps though .. I read about the metalic 'ting' this pistol has when u dry fire .. and like that other person, its not a nice sound ... rather have something in there for the pin to tap against..

EDIT - since its completely normal, why does the barrel move a little bit with the slide locked back?

the barrel is made to kinda free float with the slide back. if you notice it actually pivots downward slightly to help the round load into the chamber. if the barrel was ridged it would be a lot more difficult to run the slide back and forth. with the slide full forward the slide should lock the barrel into firing position and any play there will result in inaccuracy.

the barrel 'wiggle' is normal...

about the frame 'tool' you only need to revove it to change the backstraps, you DON'T need it to field strip the gun! (use any other object, q-tip, pan, finger etc).

I find the best/easiest way to remove the 'tool' is to use an edge of the table... ;)

yup, there is absolutly positivly no barrel wiggle with the slide fully forward ..

and I also read that thread where Canadian Ammo confirmed that the 2 free mags and $50 US check was valid for canadians. I plan on filling all that out and sending it to S/W in the new year .. I honestly had no idea when I purchased the gun!

I wasn't sure if I was totally happy with the medium backstrap so I was thinking about trying the other ones. But if the tool is such a bear, I think I might just leave it be for now until I can get it out to the range for a proper shakedown.

slushee, make sure you post back when you get it to the range and tell us how it went. I'm just waiting for the CFC to do the transfer on mine, it'll be my first handgun too, to say I'm excited is an understatement.

I used a needle nosed plier longwise to get the lock turned, with extra leverage you can afford to be gentle. In order to get a feel for the pistol you don't need to lock the insert in, so it won't take much fiddling to figure out which one works best for you. It's ridiculous that you have to wait for an "ATT Course" - what ancient secrets are they going to teach you that myself (or any shooters in the Western half of the country) don't know, or need to know. I think that's just pure B*llsh#t. What you need to know you proved you knew on your RPAL test.

....and the ATT course is basically a restricted course! I didn't have to wait for the couse since I took it before I actually joined the club ;)

but seriously use an edge of a table to remove the 'frame tool'; place the gun with the tool on the table, muzzle pointed down. push and turn the gun at the same time! It works quite well! I'm using small grip myself; slim but long grips (such as usp) don't fit my hand well, but I have no problem with bigger grips of P226 or 92FS :)

Congrats for the new toy Slushee!

How long it took CFO to process you transfer?

I waited 2 weeks and don't think I can have my X'mas gift on time this year!:(

You made a great choice, they are great pistols and fantastic to shoot! Since you're in BC I can't see a reason for the delay - most of mine are done the next day or at most within 2 working days - just another perk of living in the right place :D

It's always one of the first questions asked, there are several posts regarding it at the M&P forum.

I used pliers wrapped in a cloth the first and only time I took it out. I use my finger/q tip etc. to push down the sear/blocker yellow thingy when stripping/cleaning.

The tool is too much hassle to remove..and no need anyway except to change the grip.

This works too;

Remove the magazine
Place the butt of the pistol, muzzle down on the edge of a hard surface (desk, counter, etc)
Wedge the edge of the frame removal tool against the top of the surface and use the leverage of twisting the pistol to turn the tool.

You'll also notice the base of the mag fits the tool exactly, like a wrench. You can use that too.

It Does get easier after the first half dozen times.

These forums are worth a visit.

RANGE REPORT for us later.

I think I might be the first gun nut in Canada :) to polished the slide (Equinox style) and trimmed the beavertail on the M&P! IMO it look way better this way

Davy Crocket - No problem, I'll post the range report but it wont be till the end of Feburary given the wait for the ATT class and then waitin for the paperwork :)

ian in vic - yeah, I can't see the range ATT class being any different then the RPAL test .. but I suppose an extra "make sure he knows what he's doing" isnt' all that bad. I knew about this extra long wait going in so maybe that's why I'm not upset about it all.

IM Lugger - used the edge of the table, worked perfectly! I tried the other two backstraps and ended up putting the original medium back on :) Go figure eh? From now on I think the tool is going to stay put and i'll just use a toothpick or something else instead of taking off that bear again.

OnnO - I originally put a deposit down on the gun November 24th, then the final payment went on Nov 28th. I am not sure when they put the paperwork in, but I called them on Dec 18th and they called me back saying the ATT was in. I was worried just like you that it wouldn't show for xmas ... I've got my fingers crossed for ya hopin santa brings you a late xmas gift!!

hatman1793 - Thanks!!! I switched clubs just recently to EESA in hopes of doing some IPSC shooting .. and while I have heard of PPC, I really have no idea what is involved. But if it gives me a reason to shoot my new smith, then maybe you will be able to twist my rubber arm and come out and try PPC.

marlin60 - that's exactly what I did .. used the edge of a table and used all my body weight to twist it, then hooked the edge of the turned tool and pressed down hard .. the tool poped out and I almost fell over but mission accomplished!!

Thanks again everyone for the warm welcome to pistol shooting .. I have to admit it was an impulse buy, but not one I will ever regret!
