FAQ:
How are we still doing 3 Gun after the OIC?
We changed the rules, honestly. In the months following the OIC, we included two new divisions to keep people in the sport: Rimfire and Manual. Rimfire allowed shooters to use whatever .22 they had in the gun safe for competition, with a slight modification to the scoring that requires them to get more hits on a target to neutralize to balance it out. Manual division is the similar, but opposite. Manual allows you to use any centre fire bolt, lever or pump action rifle but you need only a single round to neutralize paper targets. I shot this division for a couple of matches and had a blast with my Lee Enfield. Only downside was getting everyone to help me find my .303 brass after I shot a stage.
What are the kit requirements?
You need a rifle, centre fire pistol, twelve gauge shotgun, additional magazines, the ability to store extra shotgun shells and a holster. That is essentially the bare minimum for what you need to compete in 3 Gun. Stages will commonly require the shooter to draw their pistol from a holster, but so long as the holster is secured to the belt and is capable of retaining the pistol during vigorous movement, that is all that is required. Rifle can be pretty much any calibre, but pistol has to be a common pistol calibre (i.e. 9mm, .40S&W, .45, .357, .44, .38, etc.) and not a rifle calibre. We've had people ask to use a 5.56mm pistol which we cannot accommodate, as it would destroy the steel targetry not rated for rifle rounds. Shotgun is twelve gauge and can be pump, semi or mag fed. The shot size is at the discretion of the shooter, but #7.5 or #8 is recommended. Shotgun must use lead shot for safety on steel targets, and if there is a requirement for slugs for a match it will be listed on the registration page on Practiscore.
I've never shot 3 Gun, how does it work?
The stages are scored on pure time. Your overall stage time is ranked against the other shooters for how fast you can complete a course of fire. Penalties are added in the form of additional time to your overall stage time for things such as not neutralizing a target, shooting a stage out of order, hitting a no-shoot target, and things of the like. Gross safety breaches result in a stage or match disqualification, depending on the severity of the offense. Disqualifications are not common by any means, and shooters are walked through what constitutes a DQ before each match as part of a safety brief.
Do I need my Black Badge to compete?
It is not a requirement to have your Black Badge to compete in 3 Gun.
I'd like to try 3 Gun, but don't want to commit $30 to figure out if I like it or not.
No drama's, we run free to attend practice nights every other Thursday that all are welcome to attend, spectate or just ask some questions in person. The best place for information on when these practice nights will be running is on the Brandon Wildlife Association page. We typically use bay 5 on the Brandon Wildlife Association range, so feel to drop by and ask questions or shoot a practice stage to see if it floats your goat. And if you don't have the requisite equipment, don't worry. Bring what you can and we'll either tailor the stage to what you have, or if you ask nicely, you may be able to borrow a firearm from one of the other shooters.
In summary, for those who have not tried 3 Gun I would describe it as follows: I have never fired so few rounds but had so much fun while shooting.
By all means, shoot me a message or comment on here if you have any questions.
