FAQ:

How are we still doing 3 Gun after the OIC?
We changed the rules, honestly. In the months following the OIC, we included two new divisions to keep people in the sport: Rimfire and Manual. Rimfire allowed shooters to use whatever .22 they had in the gun safe for competition, with a slight modification to the scoring that requires them to get more hits on a target to neutralize to balance it out. Manual division is the similar, but opposite. Manual allows you to use any centre fire bolt, lever or pump action rifle but you need only a single round to neutralize paper targets. I shot this division for a couple of matches and had a blast with my Lee Enfield. Only downside was getting everyone to help me find my .303 brass after I shot a stage.

What are the kit requirements?
You need a rifle, centre fire pistol, twelve gauge shotgun, additional magazines, the ability to store extra shotgun shells and a holster. That is essentially the bare minimum for what you need to compete in 3 Gun. Stages will commonly require the shooter to draw their pistol from a holster, but so long as the holster is secured to the belt and is capable of retaining the pistol during vigorous movement, that is all that is required. Rifle can be pretty much any calibre, but pistol has to be a common pistol calibre (i.e. 9mm, .40S&W, .45, .357, .44, .38, etc.) and not a rifle calibre. We've had people ask to use a 5.56mm pistol which we cannot accommodate, as it would destroy the steel targetry not rated for rifle rounds. Shotgun is twelve gauge and can be pump, semi or mag fed. The shot size is at the discretion of the shooter, but #7.5 or #8 is recommended. Shotgun must use lead shot for safety on steel targets, and if there is a requirement for slugs for a match it will be listed on the registration page on Practiscore.

I've never shot 3 Gun, how does it work?
The stages are scored on pure time. Your overall stage time is ranked against the other shooters for how fast you can complete a course of fire. Penalties are added in the form of additional time to your overall stage time for things such as not neutralizing a target, shooting a stage out of order, hitting a no-shoot target, and things of the like. Gross safety breaches result in a stage or match disqualification, depending on the severity of the offense. Disqualifications are not common by any means, and shooters are walked through what constitutes a DQ before each match as part of a safety brief.

Do I need my Black Badge to compete?
It is not a requirement to have your Black Badge to compete in 3 Gun.

I'd like to try 3 Gun, but don't want to commit $30 to figure out if I like it or not.
No drama's, we run free to attend practice nights every other Thursday that all are welcome to attend, spectate or just ask some questions in person. The best place for information on when these practice nights will be running is on the Brandon Wildlife Association page. We typically use bay 5 on the Brandon Wildlife Association range, so feel to drop by and ask questions or shoot a practice stage to see if it floats your goat. And if you don't have the requisite equipment, don't worry. Bring what you can and we'll either tailor the stage to what you have, or if you ask nicely, you may be able to borrow a firearm from one of the other shooters.

In summary, for those who have not tried 3 Gun I would describe it as follows: I have never fired so few rounds but had so much fun while shooting.

By all means, shoot me a message or comment on here if you have any questions.

We're working on getting more vocal with our matches and how we reach people. I've been a member on CGN for over a decade and this is my third year running 3 Gun in Brandon, but this is my first time posting about it on CGN. Go figure.

I only got my PAL last Fall so haven’t been around here too long, but it’s nice to know there are things within the province, so far I’m only aware of a few local indoor ranges (handgun only I think) and some crown lands east of the City which are kind of popular.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find the CRFSC offered often (seems to be about 1/5 as frequent here and always fills up), so didn’t go for the restricted licence… maybe I’ll upgrade in the future. Otherwise I’d be good for the shotgun and rifle component of the event.

One question for future reference about the pistol calibre… would rimfire (such as .22LR) be acceptable? The list above seems to be all centerfire so am asking since .22LR would allow me to “dual purpose” some ammo and cleaning equipment in the safe without having to consider adding a new calibre.

If you are are using .22LR in a rifle, that is fine. For pistol though, it must be a centre fire pistol round (9mm, .40, 10mm, .45, etc) as the pistol portions are heavy on steel that must be knocked down to be considered neutralized, and a .22LR won't have the punch to knock down that steel.

My wife says thank you for posting the full summer dates. She likes planning, and says I should give you a hug.

Edit to add: I've been going to the Brandon 3 gun shoots for a while now. They are well run, and lots of fun. Definitely come out if you are even a little bit interested!

For anyone even remotely interested, we are running a practice night at the Brandon Wildlife Association range next Thursday, starting at 5:00. Everyone is welcome, and it's free to come by even if you're not sure you'll like it.

Also, edited the original post to reflect us hosting a Prairie Brutality Match in June.

I agree 100%. I go to as many matches there as I can. Very well run. Very safety conscious. Much fun.

Great people.

Friendly reminder that we have a practice night tonight at 5:00 (31 March) and that we will be having out season opener match this Sunday, kicking off with registration at 9:00A.M., and you can check out all the info in link at the top of the thread.

Just bumping this post up, we've got a couple matches coming up on the 29th of May and 5th of June, and a practice night for those in the area kicking off at 5:30 on the 19th of May, which is a Thursday. Registration and more info can be found through the link in the OP.

Bumping this up again, we have a Father's Day Special match 18 June (Saturday) that will be unique as most of the stages will be shot in pairs. More information can be found at the registration link in the original post through Practiscore.

Bumping this to the top again, August 7th match registration is open, shooting out to 100m for this stage. And if you're coming, bring about ten slugs for your shotgun.
