brands of rifles

I bought a Savage 116 (stainless) in 30-06 with a detachable mag. I'm happy with it. Best 3 shot groups prone at 200yds 2", 2 3/8", 2 3/8". $700-$750 depending on where you get it.

I'd suggest a Tikka T3 Hunter. I really like those guns. A M70 would be a good choice too.
For more economy, though, I'll go a different direction. Get a Zastava Arms M98 from TradeEx. Good rifles. No plastic. Controlled round feed. True Mauser action. Only about $500.

Flame ON.

I think if you gave everyone your budget it would weed out a lot of rifles.

Yup, it would definitely help. I mean there is a "Best bang for your Loonie" in the $600 range and there is "Best bang for your Loonie" in the $900 range and
so on. All you'll get here is every rifle manufactured being referred to and speaking of which, I'll mention Browning as an excellent choice since no one
else has (this would be in the $900 range). If you are new to all this rifle stuff and I'll assume you are, then might I suggest that your first cartridge selection
be a 30-06 Springfield. It is hands down one of the most versatile cartridges available, with ammo manufacturers offerings between 110 grain bullets to 220
grain bullets and store bought ammo can be down right cheap compared to many other cartridges and it is readily available everywhere. For a low budget
dependable rifle, of good quality and accuracy, then I'd suggest the Marlin XL7 (in the $400 range). As a starter rifle, these are probably the best out
there and you won't be afraid of dragging it through the bush and getting it a little scratched up. Good luck and have fun.:)

I also think the Zastava M98 would be a good choice and Elwood Epps (they have a link at the top of the page) has them for about $600 in 270 Win, 308 Win,
30-06, 7mm Mag and 300 Win Mag. I would suggest that if you can find a local shop that carries these, that you take the time to look at and handle one before
you decide to buy. I've heard good things about the Zastava, but I've never actually handled one.

The marlins are good choices in the budget category. I like the winchesters in the mid price category.

As far as things I'd like to fondle in a gunstore...I've seen a few babes at LeBarons before...

Not sure of your price ceiling but Browning makes a nice semi and a nice lever in 300 win mag. I recently purchased one of their A-Bolts and I really like it also.
I am not stuck on one maker over another, I own Winchesters and Remingtons and of course Marlins as well as Brownings. They each have certain features that appeal to me. As the other posters have stated a rifle is a personal thing, you should handle it first to see if you like the fit of the stock, the function of the action and the overall weight/balance etc.

I can't resist:), here's my favorite,'Tikka':p.

What a beautiful dog, Johnn. :)

There's lots of good brands to choose from. Savage is a popular low-cost option, they shoot well. Winchester is my favorite. Had good and bad experiences with Ruger, but I think I'd like to try them again (actually just bought a 10/22 on a whim and love it). Weatherby Vanguard is a solid gun, as is the "parent" gun, the Howa 1500. I also really like my Browning A-bolt. CZ is another solid choice that comes to mind, but carries a bit more of a price tag. I have no experience with the TC Icon/Venture and limited experience with the Tikka T3 but owners seem to be quite pleased with them.

Trade X N.I.B. $449
Nutz sponsor as well.

I am looking for a new rifle and am having a hard time deciding which brand to buy. I have settled on a 300 mag calibre, but cannot decide on the make. Which of the manufacturers offer the best bang for your loonie? Canadian gun nuts pls help me with your playful banter...!?!

Depends on your budget. Go play with them and see which one you like. If you go with a cheap synthetic stock make sure to add on a good recoil pad, those 300 Mag are not fun with a cheap synthetic stock.

Ardent, I see you mentioned Marlin as one of your "stay away from" choices, and though I agree there has been some QC issues going on right now, it seems to be from their levers.

I have yet to hear someone complain about their bolt actions like the XL7, or XS7. I think if your on a budget, they are a better bang for the buck than the Savages since they come with a real recoil pad and adjustable trigger, and have great out of the box accuracy.
Ardent doesn't like push feeds.
