On thefirearmsblog there is a mention of Brazil looking to replace their current IMBEL MD-2 rifles with something newer.

Brazil is looking to replace the IMBEL MD-2 service rifle (and MD-3 & MD-4 variants). The MD series of rifles is based on the FN FAL design, but instead of a FAL tilting bolt it has a M16 style rotating bolt.

pediwikia has more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMBEL_MD2

So a couple of questions:

Is this thing classified as a FN FAL design in Canada, and thus OIC prohib, or would it be prohib based on select fire? Yes, I am kind of hoping here, since the bolt design is supposedly different from FAL one.

Last bit is important, because if Brazil scraps their rifles, and exports them to US as parts kits, the folks in US would start making semi-only receivers and use Brazilian parts kits. There might be hope to bring some of these into Canada, to scratch that FAL itch.

Yes, I know that I am overly optimistic.

P.S. I did search for IMBEL, but didn't find much of relevance.

I actually asked the same question a few months back, but never got an answer. After thinking about it for some time, I've come to the conclusion that they wouldn't even look at it and automatically say it's a FAL variant, given in their track record.

For the love of god, if he wins, and it all works out, I am running to get a DS Arms T48 the second it all changes.

I'd lose my mind if I could buy a FAL variant - I'd probably buy as many as I could afford, forsaking gas for the car and eating nothing but ramen noodles for weeks. :D

Christ, I don't want to buy a Norinco M14 because it would take away from the emergency FAL fund.

FFS.. lol.. now we're gonna have a 1000+ post-thread-in-a-week on ANOTHER gun being legal "very very soon"

MORE:

When is it coming?!?!?

I SO want one!!

Is it restricted?

Can I use pistol mags in it?

R:d:

:p

Buy the M14, this FAL issue wouldn't be settled for a while... you can re-stock the fund AND shoot plenty of .308 in the meantime! :)

Seriously considering it.

We can always hope and dream. :D

"and any variant or modified version of it"
"...the emergency FAL fund..." Buy the M305. FAL's will not be anything but prohibited without legislation.

So it LOOKS LIKE an FAL.

I don't see how it can use exactly the SAME receiver if it has a rotating bolt.

Perhaps my own stupidity, but I've only been at this for about 50 years.

Problem is that in this country, if it looks like something, it IS that something, even if it's ACTUALLY completely different.

The laws don't make sense.... but then, they're not supposed to make sense. They are supposed to make money for lawyers and make us into criminals.

This is the crux of the Henderson case, smellie.

Henderson's already won a case against the government's ridiculous prohibition of "look alikes" on looks only... problem is, the government appealed. The appeal is presently in the queue for hearing, and needs donations! You can make a donation through SFRC, or contact CGN user "Paul Morrison" since he seems to be very familiar with the case as well.

Is their a date for the hearing?

The thing is a failure - hence TAVOR for Brazil.

Interesting! Hadn't heard that! Seem that the Isrealis are cleaning up whenever someone's homegrown experiment failed, since the Indians have gone the same route after the failure of their new rifle.

I also remember seeing something about Argentina trying the same thing (FN re-chambered to 5.56). Don't know how theirs turned out thought.
