I recently order a Lyman tumbler from P&D with the media to go with it. No one I know owns a tumbler so I can't ask them, but how long does media last? Do you use fresh media each time you clean your brass? Any and all input is much appreciated

Search this forum....been discussed ad-nausium in the past.
Life of media depends on how much its used, what media used etc., but gives sevice for quite some time...certainly many batches before tossing.

No you don't have to refresh each time, and if the brass is not black , one run of media will last a long time. And then you can get the green liquid from Lyman to refresh existing media.
Do be careful with media , handle as with any poisons , lead will be a concern(use gloves) or wash with warm water and soap. Don't make a bunch of dust that will get airborne and be a hazard to breathe...
Hope this helps a bit.

It lasts a long time. If the brass comes out clean ... it's still good. I usually cut up a "Bounce" sheet (that's Bounce for your clothes dryer) into four strips and throw it in. It seems to collect the grit that would otherwise just keep circulating in the media. I use a large Dillion vibratory brass cleaner not a tumbler style but the bounce sheet will still work for you, you just might not need to use the whole thing, cut it into four strips and just use two. How dirty it is when your done will determine if you might want to use more of it or not. It's cheap in any case, so no worries. What are you using? corn cob or crushed walnut? Are you putting any polishing stuff in with the media? Keep in mind that the brass only needs to be clean, shiny is nice but not a requirement. If you're new to this, I would suggest NOT de-priming the casings before tumbling or you'll be picking media out the primer pocket. If you do clean your brass without primers, the next time you're at the Dentist, ask for any of their used cleaning instruments, great for picking media out.

ceramic media

A friend of mine uses a ceramic media with water in a drum style tumbler. When the brass is polished he rinses it out in a sieve under cold water and dries his brass in the oven at 200 degrees F. He has two types of ceramic media one is round balls and the other is rods about 1/4 inch long, like 4350 on steroids. Once the media is rinsed clean it looks like new again.
I use a thumbler's tumbler that holds 12 pounds of media and use either corncob or walnut shell media depending on what brass I am cleaning. (corncob gets stuck inside small caliber rifle brass and has to be shaken out)

BTW his brass is polished clean INSIDE and out.
