Hi !

My problem is that the empty brass gets stuck in the way that are shown on the pictures. The gun reloades and a new round is in the chamber - with the empty brass stuck. I have some ideas about what might be wrong. First I want to hear from you here what might be...

By the way...this is happening with about 2 of 5 rounds.

I´m very greatful the hear your oppinions :D

Best regards / Stig...

Unfortunately, that's a very common problem when using the ARMS #18 scope mount. IMHO, it is primarily related to the significantly restricted ejection clearance created between the top of the bolt/operating rod and the inside top of the mount. THis is unfortunate as the low height of this mount is one of it's greatest assets with respect to ring height/cheek weld.

You'll find that with certain ammunition the gun/mount combination is much more prone to jam than others, so if you're set on using the mount then it's worth the effort to play around with different ammunition.

Barring a solution via different loads (or a different positioning of your scope/rings), if you can find an older style ARMS mount you'll be good to go (good luck though, they are rare, no longer made, and folk covet them as the problem you are encountering is pretty frequent). Either that or a different mount completely...the Smith Enterprise mounts are quite well made. Make sure to stay away from anything aluminum though...

Good luck....

If you are mechanically adept and have Hungry's M14 clinic cd (the early one, that was in his basement). It will show you how to dis assemble the bolt, and then how to re assemble it easily with an empty 30 06 round. Anyways, a possible solution (worked for my rifle with arms 18) is to trim the ejector spring and the extractor spring by about 2 coils each. This worked for me, it may or may not work for you.

Is that bolt coated with grease or just rusty? Clean it.
I'd be changing scopes too. That one is almost as big as the rifle. Burris makes good scopes but that one really belongs on a heavy barreled bolt action.

Hey Stig, Valkommen!! I have an ARMS#18 mount on my m305, but have a much smaller scope and rings on it. I don't have any of the ejection problems you seem to be having. Ta de lugnt i socialist sverige.

Thanks for all replies :D

I did´t say all in the first post because I wanted all opinions so objective as possible. This rifle did not behave like this before. It started after this changes:

- National Match gas cylinder.
- National Match spring guide.
- Lower scope mount (don´t remember the name)
- Badger medium hight 30 mm scope rings.
- Adjustable Gas Plug.

What I have thought about at first is that this is caused by a to fast recoil. The bolt slams forward BEFORE the empty brass is cleared. When it is stuck it sits real hard and I have to use some force to pull the op-rod backwards. My gas plug causes a to high preassure. On the other hand I can´t find a point where it reloades and also ejects the brass properly. However, it ejects differently. Sometimes +1 yards and the next round 1 feet.

Take a look at this picture:

This shows the bottom of the knobs (side) cower for the scope. Can you see the brass marks? I guess that the brass hits there and then can´t fly as they should. Then the bolt comes forward = problems.

The scope mount is low and short. The front scope ring is "fat" as well. Perhaps it also hits the brass on it´s way out. There are full of brass marks on it but I cant tell what kind - the shell gets stuck there when it jamms.

My plan is to go to the range and shoot 50 rounds without the scope and mount. If it still occure = new spring, plunger etc.

No problems without new springs then I try with the mount only. If this causes the problem = new and higher scope mount.

And is the low scope and fat rings the reason = higher scope mount.

Right?

To Throttle-Monkey: Tack det är bra. Socialistsverige är också vapenhatarsverige.

Stig- I did have problems with my m14s, it would short-stroke sometimes, but this was without a scope or scope mount. I found my gas plug was loose. When you say that you are getting varying ejection distances it could be gas related, or maybe the brass is hitting the knob. I would try shooting without the scope and mount to see if you are getting proper ejection. There are guys on here who know much more about m14's than I do, hopefully they would be able to help you out.

Adjustable Gas Plug? = Stick with GI gas plug, This is a problem with the Garand adjustable gas plugs. Not enough gas is cycling the action.

Also, clean your bolt, grease it properly and clean your gas system. Smaller gas ports will carbon up faster.

Thanks for all help ;)

I solved the problem. Changed to my old scope mount that are higher. Now the gun behaves as it used to. I shot +50 rounds with no troubles at all. It also ejected about 2 feet - all the time.

My guess is that the brass hitted the forward scope ring and then bounced on the target knob. Wich created an irregaular pattern reagarding flyin brass.

To: Throttle Monkey:
