I herd that if you shoot brass casings in your gun, ( I have a Custom rem700 in 243). ..it’s not recommended to shoot steel cases. I’m wondering if that’s true? If it matters?

I wouldnt shoot it in a nice bolt gun due to the fact that steel case usually means bimetal jacket, which to me is not worth the barrel wear. Some say that the steel case is harder on polished chamber as well but i have no experience with that.

If you shoot steel cased ammo because it's harder than brass it does not seal into the chamber like brass so you get more buildup in the chamber around the case, The issue that arises is when after if that chamber is dirty and you try to shoot brass cased ammo it can stick in the chamber because of the increased fouling. Other than that steel is not bad for a rifle it just does not seal in the chamber as well as brass. The myth that it does damage to rifles is just that a myth there is countless tests done to prove that as for barrel wear yes after 150,000 rounds it does show increased wear on the barrel again proven multiple times from different tests but by then your barrel is well past needing replacement and the money you saved with steel will buy you multiple new barrel replacements.

You will generally not see the accuracy with steel as you do with brass but for plinking its cheaper and good enough but cannot be reloaded which if you shoot lots reloading is a bigger money saver and you can tailor your rounds to your gun for increased accuracy
