braze-welded mauser bolt head repair... bad surprise... update, what model of mauser?

The rifle has no doubt been fired repeatedly after this repair.
I note that the braze on the boltface was not cleaned up in a tidy manner. This suggests an amateur rather than professional job.
This is not a repair with which I would be comfortable, and for that reason I would replace the bolt body, making sure that both lugs engaged and that headspace was within standard limits. Even if the rifle had been fired repeatedly.

I whole heartily agree... a bubba job and it will bite someone down the road sometime... scrap the bare bolt body, and simply grind through the body right behind the lugs so no one can try and salvage it again.

Ok, now the search for a bolt begins - anyone knows what model of Mauser this came from? Here's a picture of the back of the bolt, and the receiver where we see the inlet for the charger clips; I can't find any markings on the receiver

Are we having fun yet? :)

Looks to be a standard sported '98. Finding a body shouldn't be a problem. What caliber is it? Original military barrel or a sporter replacement? With a new bolt body, you'll be able to get a better looking lowered for scope bolt handle.

Give TradeEx a call.

I'm close to you, I have a spare '98 bolt for a project. Would need a good brushing to clean it up, bolt handle will need to be modified...send me a PM.

Well I think I would be interested in what damaged the bolt in the first place. If it was a heavy load that caused a case to let go and damage the front of the bolt....I would be interested in what damage might also have been done to the action...personally I would return it to the seller..or if not, consider scrapping the action as well as the bolt

Lou, that is a 98 Mauser from your pics. The question is now is it a short action or standard action length? The short action is definitely shorter and also has a shorter bolt. Difficult to tell by your pics.

There were a lot of short action 98s sold by International back in the day and they can be a real pain to find parts for. You mention your rifle is chambered for 30-06 so it is likely a Standard length and most common of the two.

Send me a PM and I will look through my parts bin for a suitable bolt body.
