Breaching Choke on Remington 870 "Tactical"

Is it just me, or is the addition of these so-called breaching chokes on the new Tactical 870 line completely annoying/"ghey"? I'm a hardcore Remington fan, but it is getting a little tiresome to see them slapping the name "tactical" on anything that moves and then loading it up with a lot of tacticool accessories and then charging twice what it is worth.

it could be worse, it could be a Barrett brake on a shotgun with a bead on it like the new Mossberg Roadblocker (or the previous Rolling Thunder) :runaway:

get used to it, its only going to get worse.

my prediction for the next tactical shotgun from Mossberg or Remington: it will have a grenade launcher choke, pistol grip + vertical foregrip, and be painted desert camo :runaway:

(i do agree with claybuster though about the threaded shorty barrel. i just wish there was a less embarassing way to get one).

OMG!! LOL!! (As the kids would say).

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I LITERALLY thought: "Ghey!"

The amount of mall-ninjitsu that goes into real firearms these days seems to gather steam from Hollywood - Why, I dunno, but looks seem to have become so much more important than function.

Now, before y'all get yer knickers in a twist and start flaming my aged buttocks, I FULLY SUPPORT your right to go fly your freak flag as high as you like - There may be absolutely no practical reason WHY you should need a "breaching choke" (Do they often lock you out of the skeet range for your poor fashion sense?), BUT you should have every right to go buy one.

Please just realize that it's kinda like that guy I used to see driving around North Burnaby, with the late 90's Cavalier... Fully decked out in after-market plastic, and Mitsubishi decals. I'm sure he really took advantage of the increased aerodynamic effect of the skirts / tail, etc.(NOT), but you sure know that EVERYONE noticed his taste.

Breaching choke, forsooth... Have you seen that Mossberg thing that looks like the muzzle of a Barrett .50? WTF? Lord Humungous must work at Mossberg, I guess... (EDIT: Just saw the pic above!!)

Just my thoughts.

Hugs,

Neal

Some "boys" like to play dress up. ;)

For what they charge to get a tacticool shotgun for the mall ninjas, I would just buy a spare barrel and have a smith cut it down and thread for chokes. This would only get you an 18" barrel, but that is fine for me. The 14" ones lose too much mag capacity for my tastes.

The addition of the breeching choke on the Remington tactical shotguns is a very significant advancement. Not because of the breeching choke which is a bit silly but because the barrels are machined to accept Remington chokes. Previously most 18.5" Remington barrels with bead sights had fixed cylinder chokes. My very own tacticooool 870 is used as a farm gun and I prefer tighter chokes than cylinder for #4 buckshot.

So buy the 870 and two or three choke tubes in the constriction of your choice and sell the breeching tool on the EE.

i agree it is great.... makes all these guns more useful in the end.. and if your not a fan it can be removed easily(i would rather quickly). i wonder if a full choke would work alright for clays on a 18.5"?

What the hell is that thing supposed to do other than looking ugly?

Zero.

Muzzle brakes work off high pressure rounds (AKA, .50 BMG) so for a lower pressure shotgun shell, its not going to work at all, except to add extra weight and make noise... It doesn't even look cool as far as "evil muzzle devices" go.

Best bet is to get a stock that fits you properly, and a nice recoil pad, and that will do more to tame recoil than anything else! :D

as for the 870 with the breacher, if you want to get the 18 inch barrel with choke, then just get it and get rid of the breacher.

I really like having the removable chokes for my Benelli M4, it gives it a bit of extra usability, i suppose!

I accidentally locked myself out of the cabin the other day. So, i tried my breeching barrel and blasted off the hinges...it took about 10 shots of 7 1/2 shot each to bring the damm door down. What a mess. Next time i'll bring my face shield.

X-man, I have to agree with you on the toothed breacher choke. Its more or less useless for regular people. I only know three people who ever used them. One was a Marine, one a Ranger, and the other a US SF operator, all of whom were working overseas at the time.

However, the toothed breacher choke does have an added bonus... it looks scary as hell to those who don't know firearms.

...and the whole threaded barrel option ain't too shabby either.

Are you a fool or just a horrible comedian?

I have no use for them either.

I prefer to keep things simple and functional.

I've been pissed with Remington ever since they went from the Model 700 VS to the VSF in a varmint rifle.

Now they don't even have a VSF.

I really wanted a LH Model 700 VS in .223 Rem, and one in .308 Win.:(

Well I just bought one and guess what. It's plain cylinder.

where did you find this out? it isnt in the manual.

ive owned one for a year this month. i was under the impression that it was improved cylinder.

"The Tactical choke on the 81198 model is closest to an Inproved Cylinder choke. This is confirmed by Remington Tech Support. I measeured mine and the constriction from one end to the other end of the choke is .013″ which falls close to an Improved Cylinder Choke which is typically .010″ constriction."

i should call remington tech support on monday and confirm it.

The breacher has this written on it (at least mine does):

REMINGTON.:
TACTICAL EXT
CYLINDER

I never measured mine so I can't say with 100% certainty that it isn't improved. I'm just going by what's written on the extension.

Yes. If it were Improved Cylinder I'd imagine it would say IMP. CYLINDER or something to that effect. It doesn't matter much to me anyway. I don't shoot open many doors lately and will be switching it out for a Modified choke as soon as I find one.

Please do. I am curious now.
