Break action single shot rifles

I'm thinking of getting a break action rifle (223 Rem) and I am looking for opinions on either the H&R rifle or the Baikal rifle. Anyone played with either and your opinions are welcome. Also who carries them as a stock item would be good to know.

Had the baikal but sold it. Fun little gun, but open sights are not great and be ready to do some frigg'n around if you want to scope it.
 
IMHO the H&R/NEF are pretty good rifles and shotguns, lots of fun and rather...addictive. :D

Then again I might be biased as I have 6 of them. ;)

I haven't tried or owned a Baikal yet.

From what I have seen you need to use dovetail/rimfire style rings.
I guess it bugs some people.

On a side note, I find the hammer on the H&R/NEF can be a little more tricky to work around depending on the scope set up one tries to use.
 
H&R is owned by Remington now. They got it after buying Marlin. So parts will likely not be an issue should you ever need 'em. Baikal seems to be hit or miss for that. Or used to be. Even though there's a Canadian shop in TO.
I think there's a hammer extension like the one used on a scoped Win 94.
Epp's is a Baikal and H&R dealer.
 
I don't know if its a issue for you or not, but the Baikal does not have an exposed hammer. I had overlooked this when I bought a 20 ga shotgun for the wife. I do not like relying on the cross bolt safety. I would much rather have the H&R with the hammer. Seems safer to me. H&R also comes with a weaver style base attached in most cases.
 
Because of the tranfer bar the safe carry for the modern H&R/NEF is one in the pipe.

I'm not sure I would do that with a Baikal.
Also I'm not a fan of the Baikals decocking system.
 
I. Have both and perfer the baikal due to the easy takedown and extractorand I also like open sights. Weaver makes a scope rail that slides over the existing baikal scope rail and then you can use 1 inch rings. I have used the 22rings also on the baikal scope rail.

I'm just looking for an inexpensive toy to play with. I have a Savage Edge in 223 and I think I have it shooting as well as can be expected. getting boring. Time to change for something else and start over. Probably sell the savage and reinvest in a single shot. I have never had one.
 
I have a H&R Ultra Varmint in .223 with a 24" heavy bull barrel. Sadly haven't gotten around to test firing it yet. I like it, except for the weight. That's due largely to the barrel, but it seems too heavy for what it is. It's not heavy in the grand scheme of things, but for a single shot it feels hefty. Guess I just need to beef up. ;)

My H&R Parder in 12 gauge with a 28" barrel is considerable lighter on the front end. I'm slowly trying to fit that barrel onto the SB-2 receiver, but I don't have much time at the moment. It would be very nice if we had a steady supply of barrels.
