Breaking in a barrel

What do guys like Lilja, Kreiger and Speedy Gonzales know? Compared to cgn members - what have they accomplished? Just a couple of barrel maker hacks and a record setting Benchrest Shooter...

It's a tough decision... ;-)

Good if it works for them. Does not prove in any way their way is the best way.
Thats what they do. At their level - maybe they can see or believe it make a difference. For everybody else, if it make you feel good..well do it.

Not because your wear the same Nike shoes as a basketball star that you will be a star and that it does you any good.

Break in has commenced. Five rounds down range. The fouling should be insane.

It hardly works.

Ok. So barrel got some carbon/powder solvent. Soaked for ten minutes, then brushed, then the crud pushed out. Now in goes the wipe out patch out. A 30 minute soak produced the patch below. No blue? How can this be? I just put five solid copper bullets down a barrel that is BRAND NEW! There must be something wrong with my copper solvent. So in goes the bore scope. Well I’ll be. This barrel may live to see another day. ZERO copper. Now admittedly the powder solvent likely got some copper. But, what am I trying to accomplish again?

Is that a similar rifle or did your mashburn get a stainless 7RM tube?

Let me guess. The original mashburn tube wasn’t broken in properly and you couldn’t stand to use a hamstringed rifle.

No way to tell if the BI will contribute to longer string consistency but it doesn’t look like it hurt during these twenty shots. My BI routine rarely exceeds 5 shoot/clean cycles and I don’t mind doing it.

So, obviously thoughts vary considerably regarding Barrel break-in.
I always understood that break-in was aimed at future ease of cleaning, NOT necessarily improved accuracy.
Obviously, if one has a lot of copper buildup, accuracy will suffer. But proper break-in removes that
before it can accumulate, thus making future cleaning less odious. My personal experience seems
to support that. Dave.

The abused T3x UPR 6.5cm still stacking shots. 120gr Hornady ELDm factory ammo

So that's sub half moa accuracy with 4 different factory loads and zero break in. Hopefully it can be cleaned up sufficiently in the future!
