I would only use a jointed rod as a last resort. I take one when I'm traveling in case I get caught in the rain and have to wipe down the bore but I wouldn't do heavy cleaning with one. I use Dewey cleaning rods and have had great success with them.
For the break in I have, in the past, done the clean to bare steel, fire a shot, repeat for 5 shots, then fire 5 shots, clean to bare steel, repeat for 25 shots. I don't know if it helped or hurt but I can say that I followed that process on my Savage LE2B and it shoots 1/2 MOA or better. That said I didn't do it with my Stevens 200 and it shoots as well. I also have custom tubes from Ron Smith and Ted Gaillard and I didn't "break in" either.
Probably won't hurt so go ahead and do it if you want.
