I picked up what I think is a Breda M1 Garand today. No plans to buy it. Popped in a little country store that sold guns, and it came home with me. Still in the heavy grease from storage. Where do I look to find out if it's 7.62x51 or 30-06? I know very little about Garands. Just stumbled upon this one. Can't find a calibre stamp.

Thanks. I've only heard about 308 Garands. I had no idea if they were common. I'll be doing my reading, but are these generally a good variant of this rifle? It seems like it's in great shape. Owner said his father bought it from SIR in 1990 and never shot it.

Which little country store?, curious to find a store bringing hardware like that in.

I have a Breda that I like quite a bit. I believe they are generally regarded as being very well built- better than wartime quality. One problem is finding out anything about them in an English language book.

Is there any commercial ammo that would be safe in this rifle? I've heard the American Eagle is safe.

I have been doing a lot of research on this as I have been looking to shoot my M1s. The consensus seems to be no. Unless you buy the (Hornady I think ) Garand loads. Expensive, and I have never found any around. I used to shoot the win white box 150gr load, but it is not recommended. However you can buy a gas cylinder plug that is adjustable so you could set it to a specific brand of regular loads in the 150 to 168 gr. at 2600 to 2700 fps. I am in the process of getting geared up to reload for my Garand's . Actually if it is in .308 same things apply Just like the M305s and M1As The action is designed to work at a certain gas pressure to cycle the action and most commercial loads are way over the designed pressure curve.
If you have access to a Hornady 9th edition reloading book there is a section on the Garand.

PRVI makes some Garand ammo as well.... Tradex is just sold out at the moment.

So I bought a box of American Eagle (M1 safe) 30-06 ammo. How far should the casing go into the chamber. I have between 1/8" to 1/4" sticking out. The bolt appears to close the same distance as on an empty chamber. Can anyone help me out with this one?

Also, it has a vague white stripe around the butt stock not far behind the pistol grip. I can't tell if it's paint or just old tape tacky. Would a stripe in this location indicate anything about the rifle?

My Breda is 30-06. I've only ever shot the 150gr Federal blue box ammo you can get at Walmart with no adverse effects. They are not THAT picky on ammo.

Post some pics if you have any, and the experts (not me!!) would gladly help you.
