Breech loading

This may sound a bit ignorant, but.....
Can I load a round directly into the breech of a centre fire lever or bolt action without damaging the extractor?
I do that with my pump shotgun when shooting trap, but have heard it is a no no with some semi auto handguns. What about bolts and levers?

Should usually always load from the magazine on crf (controlled round feed) rifles. Some will say no problem with certain ones but having the extractor jump the rim shouldn't be done with any regularity imo.

Winchester Model 70 CRF, Ruger M77 CRF, and BSA CRF rifles are designed to feed either way as they have beveled faces on their extractors to push over the cartridge rim easily.

I guess that means for most bolts and levers don’t do it.

Unless it is a true CRF action like a pre ‘64 Winchester or original Mauser , I would not give it a second thought , I rarely load from the magazine at the range unless I am actually practising that way

No worries single loading lever rifles at all. I've treated all of mine as single shots over the years for most hunting & plinking missions. Only stuffed the magazine tube for
competition with select rifles.

Yes, and once you learn where to push of the side of the extractor to pop it over the cartridge rim while chambering you can single feed them too.

Hmmmm, I’m going to give this a bit more thought
I have a ‘92 that won’t feed a particular brand of 38 reload (fine with everything else). Easier to load one at a time without the gate snapping at my finger.

Some of the CRF rifles can be single fed from the top if there has been a cut-out milled into the barrel opening to facilitate the extractor a space to "move to" when bouncing over the cartridge rim, if there is no room for the extractor to fit into while chambering a round, it will not allow it to happen.

I don’t make it a habit but do breech load my Tikka when in a hurry. My custom P17 I always feed rounds out of the magazine.
