Don't know if this technique is new or not.... Was going to set the octagon barrel up in the four jaw chuck to bore for the tap. I tried a different approach. Took a salvaged bronze sleeve from a valve. Bored it so that it was a tight slide fit on the barrel. Split the sleeve lengthwise, ran the barrel through, and grabbed it in the three jaw chuck. Automatically centred the barrel, no fooling around with the four jaw. Bored for the tap, and started the tap in the lathe.

Sounds like you are tapping the breach for a muzzle loader. In my case, my head stock is small enough that I have to work with the whole barrel outside the chuck and on an octagon barrel I make a bushing up out of nylon which I force over the octagon barrel then turn concentric and of course put it in a steady rest.
