Bren Gun Carrier is for sale in my area, it is in running condition. Unfortunately, all the armour has been removed. Seller is asking $7,000.00 Firm for it. My cousin is interested in buying it, as a restoration project. Is the price reasonable or totally crazy, I have no experience in military vehicules.

Seems a bit high based on the 3 or 4 I've seen for sale in the last two years, BUT they don't come up much anymore. I'd say it isn't a deal but maybe not unrealistic.

One of 'em sold in Nova Scotia in 2010 for 12 grand asking price. Also in running condition and needing restoration. Costs a bundle to restore and drive 'em. There's a guy in Minnesota making body parts. A 4 piece set of engine covers runs $375US.
Runs on a V8 gasoline engine. 20 gallon tank(75 litres from 20 US gallons is close enough) at $1.34ish per l is $100 per 250 K.

I really don't think anyone that would be buying a bren gun carrier would be concerned about operating costs
lol

If its mechanically sound by that I mean the engine, good compression, not pumping oil out of heads, block not leaking or cracked runs on all 8 the carb is an original and not all beat up, good clutch does not chatter or hang up the trans 3 speed I think all gears engage and don't jump out or make weird noises or is leaking oil ,seals gone the rear differential check oil if you can no metal flakes or water same for everything that's got or is supposed have oil. Now the sliding steering beam ( the middle set of bogey's wheels ) are supposed to move side to side to gether as a unit. Hi speed steering! Not sure but I think it's 2 or 3 inches. Now you got the breaking system to check I believe they were drums. Not broken or missing pieces or jamed up manual by rods ? Fuel tank full of crap leaking ? rotten radiator and hose water pump ? Now the fun stuff the body how bad is it rusted what's missing .The lags and bogies what's missing jammed up broken dry rotted wood, busted springs? Oh yes the sprockets are they worn out? Now if everything good bye it its cheep! Best of luck! just curious is this carrier in the Eastern townships like Birchton? Cause there's one there!

well most have a ford flathead v8 some cracks are reparable(mostly in the head area) with locknstich repair kits carbs are most likely like every other ford flathead v8 single 2 barrel 3 bolt carb good news edelbrock makes new ones if needed the trans is also most likely a standard 3 speed that would come in many other vehicles plenty about I have a few kicking around myself

I am just finishing up my own carrier after it languishing about for almost a decade. The best support group is over on Maple leaf up.

The 7K is a bit high, but if it has the original engine (flathead 85 hp 221cu inch) and the tracks are in good shape, then that is liveable. To check the tracks, count the number of links. 168 is brand new, and at 158 it is worn out.

There is a couple guys in Alberta who have had the armour pieces laser cut at reasonable prices. Riveting it all together is a bit of a chore, but once you get going isn't so bad.

Restored, you are starting at around 35K these days, to a high of around 70-100K for pristine and original examples.

The transmission is just the standard Ford 4 speed as used in the trucks of the era. There is a couple holes added to the back of the case to accept the coupler adapter, and the shifter is unique to the carrier since it ir remote shifted, but otherwise parts are all common transmission pieces.

I had mine to the local cruise night the other week. It was, of course, the only one there, and had between a dozen to 20 people around it at all times.

I paid $4500 for mine 3 years ago, running with a chevy engine and transmission, no upper armour, tons of other odd mods, but a complete set of spare track included, and various other spares. You won't regret buying one though...

My cousin purchased the carrier this weekend and he is going to have it professionally restored. Thanks for all the advice, JP

Tell him the absolutely best internet forum for Universal Carriers is the Maple Leaf Up group. Parts, tools, drawings, advice, encouragement and troubleshooting.

If he is going to have someone else rebuild it for him, make sure that guy knows about the Maple Leaf Up group.
