Just saw this brochure:

This hot loaded 600 gr Brenneke (Maximum Barrier Penetration Magnum - 3545 lb ft energy @muzzle) should be the best penetrating factory slug - 42"+ in bare gelatin (and just 5" or so less after going through glass or kevlar), 15 1mm steel plates...Oh, my...

I wonder is the actual slug the same one they use in their hunting loads (just loaded much hotter to 1650 fps vs 1500 fps for the Black Magic) or it is a harder one...

When are we going to get original Brenneke loaded slugs in Canada ???
 
im assuming its a harder alloy. from looking at the slugs after penetration they dont look remotely like any slugs ive put through even phone books or milk jugs. they're still intact and in pretty good shape after penetrating some harder thicker things.

I think The Shooting Edge is still waiting on approval, call them up and let us know if there's an ETA yet.

Those are pretty impressive specs considering it is a 2 3/4" cartridge, and a 1 3/8 oz slug... I have a few of the ones pictured above as well along with some 3" 1 3/8 oz loads.... I am looking forward to aquiring some more in the future...

Years ago I bought a 25 box of original Brenneke's for reloading, I wish that was still an option, but I have never seen them available as strictly components again...
 
The link wouldn't show up on my phone but I know the brenneke 3" gold magnums would go thru a hellofa lot. Easily broke thru 3 cement foundation blocks end to end and I never recovered the slug. I've only got a handful left now.
 
I've been using Brennekes for years, although recently the fiber wad has been replaced with a plastic one. The penetration achieved is from the shape of the slug, not from any special alloy as it must be able to pass sagely through any choke.

Here's a pic of several recovered Brenekes with a Federal foster for comparison

Boomer, just out of curiousity.... What were they shot into? There appears to be very little damage to them... The only slugs I have seen with that little deformation is ones I have picked up on the range after snowmelt....
 
Believe it or not, they went into a sand berm about 25 yards from the muzzle. That says much for the Brenneke design doesn't it; when used on a live target, the flat nose displaces a great deal of tissue, and the heavy skirt doesn't deform as readily as a foster slug's.

That is pretty incredible Boomer, I woulda never guessed... I have shot plenty of Brenneke's at the range over the years, but never recovered one, and our berms have a lot of coarse material so I don't believe they would've looked anything like those ones... I recovered a 1 oz Winchester Foster from a 3" load that was fired into a 5 gal pail of water and the thing expanded to look like a 1 1/2" washer.... In hindsight I wish I had weighed it to see how much weight it retained, it didn't look like it lost very much...

I've recovered a bunch of those washer looking fosters as well, thats what led me to drop those nasty kicking 3" Federals in favour of Brennekes and Challengers, and of the two I prefer the Brenneke.
