Brief Can-am socom 18 review

Probably just needs some grease and some firing to break it in.

That is what I think of. Unfortunately, she won't see the sun until weekend. For the price point, I think it is good package. The metal finish is a bit rough but I can live with that.

Got mine delivered yesterday. The fit and finish seems better than my 2007 full size norinco. I won't need to shim the gas system as it is good. I really like the balance of the gun. Now the problems, the mags are very hard to release and more often as not the bolt will release and slam forward when the mag is removed. And the front sight is adjusted to the right, which makes me suspect the barrel indexing is off, the operating rod guide is very loose. The trigger is very very good. All in all I am happy with it so far but it needs some work. I think when Hungry has his next clinic in central Alberta I'll be there.

My sight was all the way to the right as well, but the sight base looks good. But it feeds dummy rounds without an issue. I re-centered the sights and will have a better idea after the weekend.

Only issues

Mag release is beyond tight getting mags out is a pain.

Safety is very very stiff

Rear sight needed to be disassembled and cleaned was quite "gritty" and difficult to adjust.

Trigger group needed a good clean to function correctly -
in this case to release the secondary sear and engage the primary after releasing the trigger.
passes all tests fine after cleaning

All in all a good clean, and inspection, and read and go through the post assembly tests and it seems to be good to.

Spray some lubricant on the mag release spring and be amazed when mags start releasing easily.

Thanks, I will give that a try. But I may have miss spoke the mag release moves fine, the mag just refuses to move with out a sharp strike with the palm of my hand.

I will post back once I try lubricant.

No worries, those mags will wear in a bit too. You'd think that with all the oil on the gun at delivery, it wouldn't need more on the release :)

Just got mine today and this is the 6th M-305 I have owned and is the nicest overall.
The only issue I can see is that the op rod guide could use peening to tighten it up .
No shims required and the is barrel indexed correctly .
I only took a fast look at it but I feel CanAm has knocked this one out of the park .

Your consistent results with these rifles are from good Karma as much as anything.:canadaFlag:

Always remember the old saying's,..what goes around comes around,...........do onto others as you would have done onto you................sow into the wind and you'll reap a whirlwind...............speak kindly of a Norinco, and Buhdda will watch over that Plinko!;);)

I received my Socom today from Can Am. I ordered it on the 7th, so overall, not too bad in regards to processing & shipping time.

I, like many here, am having a real hard time removing the flash hider. I've tried using a vice and twisting the rifle, but the vice slips on the hider. I've tried whacking the hider with a rubber mallet thinking that might loosen it. No go. Any other ideas, people? What about running the hider under hot water? Would that be bad for the rifle??

Thanks!

Anyone having SIGNIFICANT trouble with their mags binding?
I can only get mine out but hitting it pretty hard (forward) with one hand, while keeping the release depressed with the other. I am not expecting "drop free" but this is crazy.

If i use the 5 round, its virtually impossible to remove.

The mag walls are rubbing on the insiode of the receiver (when viewed from underneath)

What can be done? Do I need to file the rifle for clearance???? Note: it is the same for all my mags
