From a sheer simplicity standpoint and for ease of training, the Glock does make sense. That being said, a Browning HP is a fantastic handgun, if not one of the best. We have been well served with ours, but there comes a time when it pays to change.
Great post. I concur.
The Hi-Power is still a great pistol, the intent of this thread was merely to point out the article on GB shifting to G17s. I'm a Kool-Aid fanboy, but for a different reason than some of younger shooters who have grown up in the Glock hype, and everything else hype when it comes to different platforms today. There's alot of money to be made making the best case for and marketing it best.
The Glock wasn't invented or thought of when I started shooting in 1970's. I shot competitively throughout the 80's. Started on the 1911, but the Bread and Butter was a DA/SA 9mmpistol. The Hi-Power at that time was considered one of, if not the best double stacked 9mm.s made. I love the classic lines, and would love to have a CDN HP in my safe.
Where I come to appreciate the Glock was after a long hiatus in pistol shooting. I started back with a Glock and I looked at it from a totally practical standpoint, not being currently caught up in this platform or that, and could see the Glock to me, was by far the easiest to train a new shooter on, and probably as reliable as it comes, and makes it easy to bring into action live, after long periods not leaving a holster, not many rounds fired etc etc, like alot of LE and in particular a soldier with a sidearm. I like the way one person stated where other great platforms are more for dedicated shooters and extensively trained personnel on their sidearm, although none of these would be amiss carrying a Glock either. Had I just finished a 10,000 round year through my SIG or 1911, then I may not have been as cozy with the totally different ergos on the Glock.
So my experience and opinion on this from someone who can handle a pistol, shot it very well at one time, and started over with an open mind, made a choice based on observations and comments of very exprienced persons, and was not let down in any shape or form.
It is a great pistol for this,......low round counts, little and sporadic training, very little sunshine being holstered 99.97%, and requiring deadly force to be brought to bear in an instant with a high puker factor engaged and not much time to get the hand on the grip safety right, the safety off, the 26 lb DA pull putting me 3 feet left at 10 feet etc etc. So my admiration is not for it's looks or it's name or its country of origin, it's because it raised the bar as a platform for holstered daily use on minimum training and in this there is something great.
