I just aquired several thousand rounds of 7.62 x51. The ammo comes in dark brown cans and come in green plastic boxes of 50. They are marked 7.62 ball L2A2. The rounds are headstamped RG 85. Does anyone have any experience with this ammo? I assume its British.

RG stands for Radaway- Green and it is Brit. It's supposed to be good, but I have not fired any of it.

There were reports from the States that the Chinese had made some copies of it including the markings. I don't know if that's 100% true or not.

Yes, the Chinese made it with the Nato symbol & RG head stamp, but copperwashed and highly corrosive too!

Is yours brass or steel case? The Chinese copy was steel cases, copperwashed as noted above.

RG ammo is indeed made by Radway Green. It is Berdan primed (hard primers for military type weapons), and has a tar like sealent on the bullets. Some lots of RG shoot very well, some lots are great machine gun ammo.

I had some RG sniper and general issue. The general issue was a whole lot more accurate than the sniper ammo.

RePete.

The sniper stuff was less accurate than the general issue? Somehow,, that doesn't surprise me.

I think the L2A2 labelled stuff is the general issue stuff.

The para below was snipped from a Ballistics newsletter dated 2002. I think the L40A1 has been developed to replace the L2A2. My experience with the L42A1 Sniper ammo is that it is pretty good,, but erratic at times. Not in the same league as Federal Gold Medal Match or the Winchester Match ammo, or Norma Match.

Royal Ordnance Radway Green recently demonstrated some of their new high performance ammunition at Bisley in the UK including:
7.62 High Performance L40A1, 7.62mm Sniper L42A1 (Bisley Target), 5.56mm High Performance and 4.6mm PDW.
The L40A1 has a streamlined bullet with no cannelure and a lead-alloy core as well as an increased energy propellant. This caused perforation of a 10mm mild-steel plate at 300m and CRISAT body armour at 1000m. With a P(hit) >70% on a 0.35m x 0.35m target at 550m, and ballistically matched with Tracer L5A3 out to 1000m, the new 7.62 is a significant advance on the current design, which has been in service for 50 years.
The Bisley Target ammunition has been similarly improved, with a high concentricity boat-tail and ogive to body. This has led to a P(hit) >98% on a 0.25m x 0.25m target at 550m.
The new developments have been made to improve effectiveness, whilst reducing toxicity on training ranges and in manufacture. Ian Clay of Royal Ordnance Radway Green advised that this has been done with minimal increase in unit cost.
