Decent article, but I did have to snort at all the comments coming from an American about keeping arms stocks up. If I recall the US were using sticks as training rifles at the start of WW1 and they had a heck of a lot more time to get their armaments ready before they entered WW2.

One nice thing, the British were damm glad that they had all those P14's in storage that they didn't use in the first go-round with the germans.

And Churchill saw to it that NONE of those guns got to civillians. Home guard or military were the ONLY folks who recieved them. Most were dumped.

Sad but true.
Actually, if tales of the darkest days after Dunkirk are to believed, some of this stuff was squirreled away under local arrangements and never got collected up again.

The British Government in 1999 or about that time sent letters to people they had to turn in for destruction semi auto shot guns and hand guns and any other guns that they the government considered not normal hunting arms. A fraction of the value of these guns were paid to their owners
Whole Colt collections of SAA and 1911s were destroyed . Some of these guns were sent from US and Canada to defend England in WWII.
Owners were not even allowed to sell these guns back to USA or other countries.
But gun crime in the UK has still increased. And one can still get a gun in the UK as with any country were the criminals never do abide by the BS laws which only affect the honest citizen. There are more illegal firearms in the Uk than there were legal firearms 20 years ago..
What has happened in the Uk will eventually be tried by the Canadian liberals here.
