British army dump - Huge quantity of Lee-Enfield relics

Thanks for sharing RRPG. Just love this type of stuff. It is like a time capsule that gives one a whole new perspective of the past. When I looked at the pictures I was shocked to see all those sling shots but then I donned on me that those are what the British used as backup weapons. Fascinating!

not sure if you are serious, but the Y shaped metal pieces are the rear sight protectors for SMLE rifles, the wood rotted away leaving the bolt attached

Cleaned some bits from Thursday's dig. See what you think.

Oh, and if anyone can identify the weird object with the stamped numbers, 'CESCO' and 'LH' please let me know!

I am very pleased with the way the No 1 nose caps have come out. Not bad considering they were just heaps of rust when I got them home! The other batch are now in soak :)

The Springfield sling buckles spent a couple of days in a rock tumbler with some very fine sand. Saves a lot of elbow grease and cleans them nicely without removing the aged patina.

some very early nose caps there, particularly the 1st column, second row, but most have the stacking swivel screw

whats with the wierd bayo lugs on some? lengthened latch lugs?

scott585 - Not sure yet. Still investigating

fat tony - First time I've seen lugs like that as well. I love digging rusty junk :)

I have seen photos of similar lugs on japanese captured SMLE rifles adapted to use Arisaka Type 30 bayonets.

fat tony - However Mr Laidler is, could you perhaps message/email him for me to have a look please?

JP - Interesting. We have found some Arisaka bayonets at the site......hmmmmmm....

Grouse Man - I used to use electrolysis but found I get better results with citric acid :)
