British bulldog markings

Ive recently aquired a pair of bulldogs...one of them is stamped on the barrel, frame, cylinder ect. with a star over a "U"...can anybody tell me what this mark is?

My best guess is that it is a belgian inspector's mark and the letter U is a code for a specific inspector. Identity is kept secret. I would expect to find somewhere on the gun either a ELG* or a perron (eifel tower like) or both

One has an irish registration number from the 1880's? do you have info on this?
