British Columbians in for a big adjustment with Aboriginal title settlement, lawyer says

The shift in ownership will be from what is normally called Crown ownership to Indigenous ownership

British Columbians are in for a big shock when ownership of large parts of the province switches from the Crown to First Nations, says Aboriginal rights and title lawyer Jack Woodward.

You think the indigenous governance will be more oppressive than federal? I guess it really depends on who is in office. Kudos though, to the people emancipating their stolen land.

Probably be an improvement; the old saying being "don't worry if your kid is *mentally handicapped* there'll be a job for him with the Ministry of Forests".

Yup the treaties on the prairies were flawed, and still haven't been fully lived up to by the Canadian government, but were a preferable system to BC where the gov't simply ignored First nations title and simply promoted squatting. It will take another generation or so to sort out all this residue of bad colonial attitudes. Hope the "new" indigenous governance rises to the occasion without too many problems.

Don't know where you live, but in BC you can't squat without Native permission on anything.

Legally the squatting on indigenous territory has been going on for more than a hundred years. Adjustments were needed and some adjustments will happen. They won't happen without problems and discussion and who knows what... hope cool heads prevail.

Bc won’t exist in the future. All the native groups want literally 110% of the land in this province. Most of these groups argue between themselves out of jealousy because one band might have more resources to make more money then the next.
Most bands can’t even fairly dole out money between their own members. Some live very wealthy lives while another family lives in a dump just down the street because of blood lines or because their family isn’t on councel.
Mark my words, the natives will eventually have everything and still won’t be happy and will still want more.

The province is in trouble. It’s pretty bad when a hunter goes out on a solo hike in trip only to be confronted by natives on horses and told that your being watched and to get the hell off their land while flashing their guns strapped to their saddle. That’s what happened to me last season. How can everyone gat along and work together when there’s two sets of laws based on race

You're from Sk and don't know "what's" needed? It's money, that's all it ever is. It's never about wanting land, the wildlife, the resources. It's always about money.

Agreed. Maybe they can take back the land in the big lower mainland cities as well. See how all the lefties and tree huggers like them then.

The lawyer gets paid very well. The chief and the councillors pay themselves more than the prime minister makes a year.
But with the land comes a 4 million payment per quarter to help manage the land.
They should all have to work for a living not just stay home eating chips and pop.
The welfare crowd now outnumber the working crowd. Thank the liberals.
