British Pistols Dying Of Old Age

I cannot recall of any British MADE pistols ... maybe revolvers, but no pistols?
Browning is a pistol USED/issued by/to British Army made in Belgium, but is not made in GB...am I wrong?

Notwithstanding the whole pistol/revolver nomenclature controversy, Webley & Scott did make a semiautomatic pistol using a special .455 cartridge. There was also a small number of 1911s made to use this cartridge for British service.

As an aside, the differentiation between pistols and revolvers is an Americanism. The official name for the Webley Mk. VI was "Pistol, Revolver, Webley No. 1 Mk VI". In British English, all handguns are pistols; revolvers and auto pistols are both considered pistols.

30 yrs old is nothing our hi powers are closer to 65 yrs old.

I was just discussing this earlier today with the fiance. My brother did his qual's with a very well used HP. Apparently the ones in use by our forces overseas are in much better condition/better maintained. I also hear somewhere, not sure exactly so don't quote me on this, that some more inglis hp's have been dug up for use in a military warehouse... If that's true, it's quite a testament to a 75 year old design.

Every picture I seen was Harry with one of these:

So, he took his candy bar and lolly pop out for the picture?

The gentleman is not known to be mean-spirited and is said to have some disposable income. Perhaps if you write to ask him he will send you some candy bars and lolly pops.

Problem Solved

I thought up something that might help the English out of their handgun dilemma.

Their handguns are too old and the country is too broke to afford new ones. The solution is the same as that used to deal with their domestic handgun problem.

The English can apply to the United Nations and pass a resolution to have handguns banned, worldwide. When they do that, the Taliban and other killers will cease using handguns, for fear of the legal repercussions. Problem solved!

This same rational has worked in dealing with the criminal element within England. As I understand it, handgun violence is now reduced to a mere historical phenomena, due to the wisdom of English legislation.

I see no reason why we cannot get the United Nations resolution passed, and then send Harry out into the field in Afghanistan armed with a friendly smile and perhaps some candy bars, to win over the hearts and minds.

After all, mere civilians like us have no reason to own handguns. Why does he?

That article is drivel, the SAS have been using the P226 for ages, going back into the 1990s. I know someone in the SAS and I remember him telling me when his handguns were banned that at least he still got to use a P226 in the Army, and that was back in 1997.

Plus Harry has a Mark 3 Hi-Power in that photo. When I was issued a pistol it was brand new, never fired, the MoD buys replacement Hi-Powers as and when needed.

There was talk about going to the USP some years ago but it never happened, the MoD considers pistols to be low priority.

Basically anyone who really needs a pistol gets a P226.

I qual with the 9mm highpower last fall, no problem. I don't recall any hiccups with the 12 guns we had on the firing line at that time. All it takes is a good wpns maint shop to look after them (esp the mags and springs).

If I had to pick a service pistol and it was on a table full of pistols would I pick it? No.

If I had one as back up to the C7 and it was between it and my Gerber tool would I pull the highpower? Ya, you bet.

Short of a new pistol, if the CF just upgraded them with new sights and a ton of new mags, the highpowers wouldn't be that bad.

I hope myself or the next generation does not have to contemplate what service pistol that is in service, but if I was in this situation the first semi auto I wish I had would be a high power as I have shot Canadian service pistols with old WW11 ammo that were beat up looking and found that the operator was the only one that screwed up! For our fighting men and women, I hope you all come home safe and sound from the big sandbox on the otherside of the world, thanks from the grandson of an WW11 Engineer and Artillery gunner, Dale in T-Bay
