I have a Brno 22 Fullstock in 7x57 and a two more Brno 21 half stock rifles in 7x64 and 8x57. They are wonderful rifles, works of functional art in my opinion. They can be enjoyed as-is by collectors or vastly improved for hunting by by having a GOOD gunsmith do the following:
- Replace the bolt shroud & safety with a Dakota or Gentry etc. Mod 70 style 3 -position side swing safety,
- the double set triggers usually need skilled gunsmithing adjustments to be acceptable in the unset mode ( front trigger only). Pulling the front trigger only on any of these rifles that I have tried resulted in a heavy, creepy 7 - 9 lb pull. The set mode where you pull the rear and then touch the font is very light and not practical for use with gloves. The DST can be replaced with a good single adjustable trigger from Recknagel, Timney and others.
- In order to use the original flat bolt with most scopes the scope must be mounted very high. Please don't grind or re-position the flat bolt handle for lower scope use, those bubba jobs always turn out badly and ruin an otherwise nice rifle. I have an original Brno skeleton mount on my flat bolt 22F with Leupold low QD rings that were custom modified and threaded to fit the holes in the base. It now accepts a Leupold compact scope ( they have a smaller dia. ocular lens) mounted much lower that would otherwise be the case with other mounts + scopes. An alternative is to have a good gunsmith replace the flat bolt with a nice Oberndorf style round bolt handle mounted lower and have the stock notched to fit.
So, your best options are to leave it as-is as a wonderfully balanced, stylish and functional rifle for iron sight use, with double set triggers used only in the set mode, or you can customize to replace the safety, bolt and trigger for a total cost of about $800 when well done.
If you spend the money for the customization you will spend less on the original rifle and the custom improvements than a Remington M7 custom shop Mannlicher will cost, and you will have an infinitely more artistic, functional, and interesting rifle that will hold its value, unlike the Remington stuff.
